Hello.
My name is Amy Dallen and I am coming to you from Geek and
Sundry's off-site location at San Diego Comicon which was,
of course, at Jolt'n Joe's.
This is the last day of Con and we are using it to
celebrate the Mighty Marvel Morning.
At least, I think that's what we should have called it.
That's not actually what we called it.
But Marvel did work with us to coordinate this beautiful
gallery of fan art to go up to celebrate the community spirit
that we love so much here.
And they also premiered some episodes of the cartoons
"Ultimate Spider-Man" and the new
"Avengers," which was awesome.
And we had a couple of special guests, so we want to thank
Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey, the voices of Thor and
Black Widow for being with us earlier.
But that's enough of me talking about awesome stuff.
Let's go look at some awesome things.
I should probably also have words that go with these, but
who needs words when you have all these pictures?
This is awesome.
This one is very funny.
I like that he included the "After Romita" which is a way
of, when you're referencing a particularly famous image,
giving credit to the source.
And then this is the famous walking away from the costume
scene, just with all of the costumes as if he threw all of
them out at once.
I am such a sucker for this stuff.
This is awesome.
This is a really beautiful and creative, like--
It's a triptych.
You don't see a lot of those.
Hank, Warren, Kurt.
I kind of want to own them and put them on my walls.
Also, Beast and Nightcrawler are the best, obviously.
There's no art on the back of that one.
No are on the back of that one.
Let's go this way.
Aww.
Deadpool has a long and distinguished history of
cross-dressing on occasion, but I believe this is the
first time I have ever seen his as Codex from The Guild.
Ah, look.
These are awesome sprite versions of the X-Men.
Wow.
This is just particularly gorgeous.
Andry Rajoelina, I'm not sure how to say your name, but you
are super talented.
And everyone should go to elshangowuzhere.blogspot.fr.
And for the record, I don't even agree and this is still
one of my favorites.
More 8-bit Marvels.
These, it turns out, are by Paolo Capdeville at
devilleart.com.
But I'm sad because they're making me want to play games
that don't exist.
So, dear internet, please talk to this person
and make these games.
This is amazing.
This is by Noelle Stevenson and it is not only an adorable
piece of art which, as I may have mentioned I'm a complete
sucker for, it's also the plot of "The Avengers." This is my
favorite, and it's one of the best things about comic book
art, because you're telling a story with pictures.
Here's Loki, confined, making a jerk out of himself.
Nick Fury is worried.
Cap and Tony are feuding.
Coulson is watching out for everybody.
And he's not actually brainwashed, but that would
make a really depressing overall summary image.
So I'd like to think that on some level these three
characters bonded.
And it's that classic thing about comic
book covers as well.
They're supposed to give you a taste of everything
that's going on.
This is awesome.
Like this range of very minimalist superhero things.
I think Bucket Head might be my favorite.
If you don't recognize him, this is the Nova helmet.
It's part of the Marvel Cosmic Universe.
What are these?
I'm compelled by their creepy tiny heads but overall
adorableness.
You gotta love anything that has Scarlet Witch, Storm,
She-Hulk, and Psylocke.
Come on.
That's just awesome.
And Colossus.
There's never enough love for Colossus.
Adventure Time.
This is not just specifically and X-Men parody, this is
somebody doing their take of X-Force and Adventure Time,
which is extra funny because X-Force is always--
I love it-- but it's always been the, like, extreme kind
of one which makes it even better to mash up with an
adorable, sweet, surrealistic children's cartoon.
Ice King is Sabertooth it looks like.
Marceline would so completely be Domino.
That is accurate.
Flying Princess as X-23.
OK, I could just point at things on
this one all day long.
Good Job Mike Vasquez.
Mike Vasquez and Joe Hogan from mikegoesgeek.com.
I wanna look at the giant heads again.
This one is titled "Various Marvel Art." It's by Jake
Sumpter at jsdesigns.com.
I don't know very much about talking about poster design,
but the removal of unnecessary elements and the coordination
of just a few colors makes these really effective,
design-wise.
This is an awesome one as well.
I particularly like the little cloud of displeasure over
Hulk's head there.
And I'm also just always a sucker for Storm.
She's one of the most inspirational and evocative
characters in the whole Marvel stable or, I
would argue, anywhere.
So I pretty much never get tired of people's
interpretations of her.
I Like this one which is a series of
face offs, as it were.
I'm trying to figure out which of these
people have been Avengers.
Like, a huge chunk of them.
Not so much Red Skull.
And once again, I love that they threw
Spider-Woman here in.
She's been in the New Avengers for several years now, or
running around with the Avengers in various
capacities.
But there is a tendency when people are doing like, say,
marvelous 18, when they're doing lineups of Marvel
characters to forget about the ladies.
So, thank you Andy Fairhurst, for including Spider-Woman on
your gorgeous picture.
Probably not because you were looking for a token lady, just
'cause she's awesome, which is the correct reason.
So since we were talking about pictures that tell a story, I
also want to draw attention to this awesome Hulk piece.
"Mad Man" by Liam Braizer, which I just think is a
particularly gorgeous interpretation of Hulk's inner
struggle, and piece of beautiful art.
Good job with that.
This when I also love.
It's "Assemble!" by Bennett Slater from bennettslater.com.
And it's obviously the cast of the recent movie, done up
propaganda poster style.
Because comic books are such a cool part of 20th century
graphic design, I love the interplay of imitating posters
that we're probably influenced by the same early illustrators
that created comics.
And it feeds back into itself.
And that's what makes for such a rewarding combination in
pieces like this.
This one obviously is a classic theme.
"The Best There Is" by Brad Horton.
And that's Wolverine taking on the sentinels who, if you have
not met them you will soon know and not love at all in a
certain days-of-future-past movie.
Oh, and speaking of recently in theaters, you probably
remember these guys.
Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg of The Warriors Three.
This is their sort of comic book incarnations, especially
as they showed up in the recent Matt Fraction "Mighty
Thor" series which was really, really fun.
I like it.
It's called "Thor Crew" by Josh Templeton.
And one more moment because I stopped and I laughed, and
then I walked away, and then I went, oh my god, I get it.
It's not just a "Midnight Cowboy" riff, it's the
"Walking Dead Pool." Marco D'Alfonso.
Awesome.
So a big thank you again to Marvel for putting together
this awesome fan art gallery with us of today's talented
fans, maybe tomorrow's a-list creators.
We've had an awesome time here at "Geek and Sundry"'s
off-site location for San Diego Comicon at Jolt'n Joe's.
We hope that you've enjoyed this, that you'll check out
more of their work, and that you're having an
awesome Geek Week.
