“Behind your waking experience, behind your dream experience, behind your sleep experience,
is your real self, ever-radiant pure consciousness.” Swami Satprakashananda
In the Wisdom tradition of the Veda… this question is always asked: Who is the witness
of the waking, sleep and dream states? It points to the fourth state of witness consciousness.
It is easy to understand based on experience. Who is watching during your waking experience?
Likewise… who is watching when you sleep? If no one was watching… how would you know
that you had slept upon awakening? So also is the dream state. Who is watching to report
what you have dreamed? In this understanding… it is said that consciousness is always watching
because it is self-aware. Consciousness is the eternal witness of all states of human
experience.
For example… you are watching this video of me… right here and right now. Who is
the real you that is watching? Is it your mind that thinks that you are watching? Can
the mind really cognize all the levels of your experience moment by moment? Or is it
too limited an instrument for such a task? Is there something greater than your mind…
a more comprehensive witness… a pure non-dual awareness… that is always watching? Can
you turn this awareness back upon itself… right now… and experience that it is the
real witness? Yes… you can… and the result is validation of the witnessing consciousness
that is always watching… itself.
This week… why not live more consistently in such wakeful awareness? Just open your
awareness and be the witnessing consciousness that is always watching. In this way you will
experience a more truthful reality and be more holistically fulfilled in
the process.
