Last level in the game. Time to put a stop to Dr. Wily's evil schemes. The level starts with those annoying green enemies from Elecman's stage.
And this time, no glitches, unlike what happened in Elecman's level...
Not often the very first screen in a level has enemies in it. Usually you have to advance at least a little bit before the first enemies show up.
Most of this level is pretty simple. Just take your time getting past these spread-shotting enemies.
Not sure why there are so many Gutsman robot-things at the top. I'm guessing Wily is planning to build an army of them?
Well, whatever they're for, I'm not gonna let him finish building them!
And speaking of Gutsman, here's a familiar (and deadly) thing from his stage. You want to get as far to the right of the moving platform to make the first jump...
And then get as far to the right on this brick and then time your jump so you land JUST as the platform flips back up.
Oh man, I can't believe I got past that in one go.
And here is a little reward for getting past that part. A 1up and an item called a "Yashichi", which doesn't appear again until like Mega Man 8 or something like that.
What does it do? Well, I'll show you. Observe my weapon meters and how much energy is left in each one.
And when I collect it...
Presto!!
All of them are filled up. And if I had lost some of my life meter, it would have been filled up too.
And now for the gauntlet, where we fight the remaining four Robot Masters, starting with Bombman.
Nothing new here. Just run to avoid his bombs and avoid running into him and he'll go down easy like last time.
Next up...Fireman. Nothing new here, just have to find the right spot to jump and shoot...
If I can find it...
Finally...except I've taken a lot of damage in the process...
Number 3 in the gauntlet...Iceman. Same pattern as last time, except I'm low on health this time...
Aww, ***...
Iceman defies gravity when attacking. He slowly falls and rises up while attacking, and yet falls normally when he isn't attacking.
Whew, that was close...and now...Gutsman.
However, I'm not worried about my low health. Even though there are no boulders to stand on, don't need them.
Like last time, DON"T jump to avoid his earthquakes and jump over any bricks he throws at you and he'll go down easy.
His jumping direction is random, and I'm lucky he hasn't jumped far to the left.
And it IS possible for him to jump into the teleporter, just very rare for him to do so.
Duh, they're all full from getting the Yashichi...***.
Time for the big man himself. The weakness in the first form of his flying machine is the red cannon on the front-center of it.
It fires its shots pretty rapidly, and each shot is fired at the exact spot Mega Man is currently at on the screen.
You need to always be moving to avoid each shot, but be careful, as the flying machine moves around and limits your room to dodge...kind of like that.
There was no way I was going to beat him on that life. I've never beaten him without taking at least one hit from him.
Alright. Round 2, old man.
The damage-recovery is pretty quick against this boss, meaning you can fire a little more rapidly to damage it, unlike with bosses like the Robot Masters.
The weapon the cannon is weak against is Fireman's weapon, and you want to be firing as close as you possibly can to the cannon when using it to do more damage to it.
But like with the Robot Masters, use caution when making the last shot. In this case, wait until he is on the right side of the screen before making it.
Damn it, knew I was going to get hit.
The second form is trickier to beat. You have to fire at the peak of your jump to hit it with the buster.
Wily's second form fires projectiles in a cork-screw pattern, kinda like the "F" weapon in the first Contra game.
He fires them one at a time about 2 seconds after each one leaves the screen.
Dodging them is pretty easy. Simply run to right just before each shot and it will pass over you.
And there you go. Wily begs for mercy for his crimes, to which Mega Man grants for some reason...
And that's the end of the first Mega Man game. Very challenging but very fun. I give it a B+ overall and definitely worth playing if you haven't played it before.
1,318,000 points. Not the most I've gotten, but see if you can beat it!! (And with as little farming for points or health as possible.)
