Great, great...
Where's my "hihihuhu"? How does it work here?
How is it? How is it?
Is this forward or backward?
Well guys, first I want to give it a credit.
The name of this lecture is: "Only Bike Save".
Yes, brothers. Only bike saves.
I didn't say this. An artist called Reynaldo Berto said.
He's a friend of mine, a cartoonist.
He came with this frase and a drawing wich you'll see...
at the end.
Only bike saves.
Well, when I was 5 years old, you'll say to me. What did I win?
Bike...
No, again. What did I win?
A bike! See how beautiful it is. A bicycle!
I'll never forget that sensation of bike and take off...
Take off on a magic carpet.
Bicycle was really like that: Ah!
I guess, when you began pedaling, had that feeling, right?
It's not possible not to remember the day you began pedaling.
And I'm absolutely sure that those who rode as a child, has this memory:
Good morning!
Waked up, PAH, bicycle.
And that was the body's ballet...
Total freedom.
That way you tasted what a smell was,
what a vision is,
what is the smell of the things.
The mobility, the freedom.
Go to schooll like this, and then come back:
Bicycle...
How is it? Go to school, come back:
Bicycle...
Ahhhh! It's beautiful...
I'm sure that if Freud instead of getting high,
and had biked,
he would call his therapy as "Bike Therapy".
Because I don't know anything that connects me with my childhood sensations more than a bike.
Anyone who goes biking, fells that sensation of...
Childhood... Pleasure.... Connected with...
Life pleasure. Eistein said...
I don't know if it is true or not, but...
I will cheat, so I can't miss it.
"Life is like riding a bike. You need to be in constant moviment to keep the balance".
You can see that the city lost it’s balance a while ago.
Because, if there's something they don't do is moving.
When we get adult, grow up, we lose this conscience.
It’s like a big pleasure, at 18 years, what did I win?
A little blue beattle...
And the musics at that time were like:
"Meu carro é vermelho. Só uso espelho pra me pentear...".
"Calhambeque BIP BIP!".
"Quero businar o calhambeque BIP BIP".
Or the worst of all:
"Entrei na Rua Augusta, a 120 por hora...".
"Botei a turma toda do passeio pra fora...".
Look. It was only that we used to enjoy.
"Pra ter FOM FOM, trabalhei, trabalhei...".
"Pra ter FOM FOM..." Who has 50 years, or less, know what I'm talking about.
And when i was wanting to have my car, i was there...
Pimpin’ my little beattle, etc...
Look how the cities were changing…
And me, inside of my car didn’t give a damn.
Look what I'm seing: car traffic...
Everything was lilke, chaos, and no one did notice.
The city was growing, those workers being fired,
Everything at downtown, nothing in the suburbs.
Everything coming from far away to the downtown, because in the suburbs that are far away there is nothing.
So, that thing coming, from the inside to the outside...
The economic model of the country stuck above one industry...
Of the big desire of cars, cars, cars....
And the entire city being redrawn
to be able to hug the cars.
And me, inside of my little car,
was not noticing that 80% of the public space was being used for me to walk with my car.
Huh?
80% of the public space: or to the car, or for the parking lots made for cars.
The rest, the rest, the rest... What is the rest?
The pedestrian,
Look, the pedestrian running in the middles of the cars, excluded... Completely excluded.
What pedestrian? Theres only drivers. They din’t give a flying crap.
Only that getting traffic, waste time... Everything. Didn’t give.
I used to take 10 minutes to get to the university, and 1 hour and a half to get back home.
That’s not life, huh?
So, because of the traffic,
focused on the traffic, focused on sadness….
Well, that, get’s straight on.
I was there, being slave of the traffic, that made me sad and BOOM!
Bicycle!
So, what did I do?
Bike...
Yeah man, I discovered my bike.
And, biking, I began to oxygen my ideas.
Began to get more self-esteem…
I began to grow up...
I began to get revolutionary ideas, because thinking, you get revolutionary.
Let's throw this thing away.
I began to save the thing that we lose the most when we are in the city,
inside a car, that is self-esteem.
I began to feel the true human scale, of being human.
Who bikes, begin rapidly to feel the price of energy.
How much it costs to take a pound over in your pocket above Av.Paulista?
You open the trunk and puts 40kg of stuff, close the trunk and don’t give a damn anymore.
How much does cost to get 4 litters of water for me to drink?
How much does it costs for me to get out tonight to go out?
"Dang, i’ll need to bike, to change clothes...".
So, when you begin to bike, you being to feel, to walk...
And turning into an human being.
And to save... Dang... Straight on, straight on...
And saving the human scale.
To feel "Im human, fit here. Get in here".
How much does it costs to walk to here, to there?
We begin to feel the best type of happiness.
First of all, happiness is inside the car.
We begin to understand the city problems in a different perspective.
We begin to calculate the value of movement.
We begin to feel the quality of the air.
Who is driving is feels the quality of the air?
Who is biking does.
Who begin to need to stop, think, argument.
Because everyone says the same thing:
"You are crazy, you are wrong".
"The streets are made for cars".
"Imagine, bike is not on the street".
"What? Go to the sidewalk".
Then comes the family: "You're gonna die".
It’s just like that.
And it gets even worse.
Because then, you begin to cross the line.
I come by bike and they told: "You can’t get in here".
And i said: "But why?"
They answered: "Because you are poor".
I started to be blocked in bars.
Blocked on parties.
Blocked on dance parties.
Blocked on "rich" places because I was a biker.
So I started to understand that the biker, did not have a social acceptation as a consumer.
I mean, the real brazilian social problem had it’s line crossed.
"The problem of the bikes on the streets is cultural".
Cultural my ***!
Do you know what is behind all of this?
Do you know what is behind all of this?!
What’s behind this, is the real social exclusion and prejudice.
Because if I don’t have a car,
I'm not a person that got a social status to consume,
I'm not a person that got an existence status for not being atropelated.
Only that you can't go and argue: "***, you are prejudice".
It ain't like that, we have to argue.
We have to begin argue.
Talk...
Think...
Get a stand...
Defend yourself...
Use a lot of *** time explaining why.
Me, that started to taking pictures with eight years, and bike with five,
I started to work with photojournalism too.
Filming and refining an argumentation.
Why all of this?
What happened because of the...
Bicycle...
The bike translated things for me.
Because I started to feel in my vains.
Brothers, the bike is an impressing thing.
Because you begin to feel these things in your vains.
It’s amazing.
Let's go?
Let's go, let's go.
And think that we are in something...
Subversive.
I love this cartoon.
This cartoon is not from Reynaldo.
So, the great question is:
Why should the streets stuck with cars and not with bikes?
This picture down there, I don't know if you know it.
It was taken from that video
of Ricardo Neis,
who hit 50 bikers at Rio Grande do Sul, ok?
He is free and it was not an accident.
How can one person use a weapon and stay free?
He tought that in front of him would not be possible a bike traffic.
If it was only one car, he would never do that.
Now, he pass over bikes.
Why?
Why?
Exclusion.
The power of who is in the car.
It means that: " I have a car and I am above the law".
And it isn't worth to face this, society has to change.
It cames,
after many years talking about this,
more than 30 years talking about this.
That picture is from 76.
About 35 years ago, I was there with my bike as a way of transport.
Bike Advocacy came with art communication.
So, pay attention...
to these...
to these comunications:
The first from the left, the yellow one, is “Respect the bike, one less car”.
Go straight to talk with the car slave that can only understand “One less car”.
So the comunication that goes direct into the vein that: “Look foward dude, theres a bike”.
Why?
Because she is one less someone like you. I mean,
It’s more space for you to use on the street. I mean,
It doesn’t propose a way out, huh?
But it comunicates.
And the second one, that i think it’s the most visceral,
That is one thing that we can only put in the market, in the propose,
After we advance in this comunication, that is “Share the street”.
And notice how this symbol is really well-made.
It was taken from the hippie symbol.
Of peace, that is tottaly inspired on Da Vinci, on humanism...
The bike in one side. The car and the street in another.
Share.
All the colors in the rainbow, that represents tolerance.
For me is the upmost of comunication, made by everyone out there fighting for a better world.
And use the bike as a language.
It's not just a bike, huh?
But with a language that they are proposing, it is:
“Share the street”.
“Alright dude, peace.”
The media tends to say we are in war.
“No way! We are peaceful!”
We are proposing a division,
Because we are of:
Bike’s Gang!
Because we have to break the paradigm that is:
More cars, more traffic jam.
More routes, more cars.
More traffic jam, more routes...
I will give one briefing, and it would be cool to interrupt this chronometer here
to say that it’s the exterior model, of how the bike is on the top of an iceberg.
Out there, the people already noticed. Public transportation...
Is not possible to transport people in individual cars.
Even the ‘Self-Driving Car’
It ocupates the same space that an usual car.
A 50km/h car weights 1.5 tons.
It ocupates 90m²,
It polutes, it weights,
And it only takes 1,2 person...
So it doesn’t exist.
The wonderfull car stays in the garage.
Inter-urban relations.
The rest is people.
So, let's go.
They get public transport: train, bus and subway,
And they put it under one authority,
That orders them, and they work together, not competiting.
Together. The train, along with the bus, along with the subway.
Calculating.
This thing of taking passangers to 3 or 4km doesn’t exist.
Need to be passangers for more.
Needs to give wings to the pedestrian.
The first thing that we need to do is draw the routes for the pedestrian.
This thing of being backed off, without signal.
Needs to give wings to the pedestrians.
How?
The bikes, shared.
When we talk of Paris, Londres and Blablabla,
The bike is being loaned, as a way to give wings to the pedestrian,
To the citizen, to the human.
Huh?
And yes, the car is punished.
With the lack of space.
Cars ocupates space.
We need to share, let's share this space.
It was a part.
This here, the politics of São Paulo.
It’s really late.
And it’s being long a time that São Paulo society wished to change and not cross the line.
It wants everything for the car, and nothing for the people.
And it can’t break that paradigm...
Inside of CET, there are people that want to change, but they can’t.
The secretery of transport is totally blind for this.
It’s impressing.
It’s what they can’t understand, is that the brazilian people are tutored.
There is a little help, to achieve all of that.
This photograph, is very important.
Take a look.
What are you seeing there?
Are too bikes riding together and sharing.
What's missing?
Wich happens on Sunday mornings, at 7am to 2pm?
When I explain to you one thing,
The line will be crossed and you will say: Oh...
Where are the cones?
Did you notice there are no cones?
The bike lane today, on the city of São Paulo, got a cone at every 10m².
Because the city can’t imagine the sharing.
They think when they share,
the indulgent driver, that atropelates,
that disrespects the pedestrian,
disrespects the biker...
There exists so much ingulgency that even the traffic authority,
Don’t think this can happen.
This photo was made by “William Glus” one week before the inauguration of the bike lane.
Where the drivers are respecting,
And the citizen is with his son, biking and no one atropelating.
Because there doesn’t exists one politic that in fact, teach
Or sinalize the traphic gaining,
To slow down the speed and draw the route for the pedestrians of the bikers.
Of the wheelchair users, or the skaters,
Of people, huh?
And leave cars with this here.
If there is traffic, the problem is yours.
Because you are only one more guy doing traffic.
So look, look how beatifull.
Now, look very closely:
It’s written 70km/h. That is absurd and only in Brazil you can do that.
No city permits 70km/h.
The probability to survive of a car hit in 70km/h is zero.
But in 60km/h it’s 25%.
No city in the planet allow this, but São Paulo does.
40km/h in a Sunday.
A car citizen driving at 61km/h it needs to lose it’s driver license in the Brazilian law.
Never one driver passed trough this type of thing before, and got fined to lose it’s driver license.
Because he disrespected the limit of velocity at the side of the bike laine that has a kid..
Because there is too much fear of the public politic to change this.
Fear...
Fear...
Lack of balls.
Where is the solution?
Bicycle...
In a pyramid!
Bicycle comes like an iceberg tip.
Here are the benefits of the bikes but I willl skip it.
So, look at this.
Bicycle is the start of a solution for changings this situation.
How is it TEDx? Change.
Bike for a change.
So, look at this, ups, ups, ups.
Unfortunantelly, the public politics of São Paulo and Brazil, see bicycle as a toy.
But bicycle is an instrument of social inclusion.
So, I tell you...
So, I tell you...
you will bike ride or bike ride,
You have two choices
Let me take my cheat again
Ups, ups, ups
Where is it?
I found
You will bike ride because you want
or by doctors orders.
That's it
Medical social alert
There's no way to solve all the world's problems using bicycle.
So, I'll ask you
What is the solution for the social inclusion in town?
Bicycle...
What's the solution for urban mobility in short distances?
Bicycle
What'ts the solution for urban mobility in long distances?
Bicycle...
Inside the metro, inside the train, inside the bus...
You go by bicycle and then get the bus, the train or the metro...
Do you know how I get to New York?
I get my by bike on bord the airplane and upon arrivel I will ride my bike to dowtown.
Bro, this is amazing.
What's the solution for public helth and child obesity?
Bicycle...
What's the solution for workers, who need to move around?
Bicycle...
... for the global warming and environment?
Bicycle...
... traffic, pollution, stress and sedentary lifestyle?
Bicycle...
Short-term solution?
Bicycle...
Medium-term solution? I can't listen you...
Bicycle...
Long-term solution?
Bicycle...
Solution for the judges, politicians and for all those who don't understand our city reality?
Bicycle
...and more bike to them!
Those who advocate against... Are working to an industry
wich is aligned with the death of more than 1 million people every year?
Every day, 100 brazilians are road-killed.
12 deaths per day in the city of São Paulo... Do you know why?
Do you know how many hospital beds are occupied with this victims who will die, 12 per day?
17% of hospital beds are occupied by these people.
The one who pay it isn't the CInsurance, it's the Social Security.ar
It is expensive... This formula is unsustainable.
So, ladies and gentlemen, repeat with me: "Only bike saves".
