The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead 9th Annual Celebration
of Leisure & Cultural achievements took place on the 10th November 2010.
This year the evening incorporated the Olympic & Paralympic values
to rename the awards.
Awards were given under the values of Friendship, Respect,
Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Courage & Equality.
The evening included a range of performances starting with a lively
& fun aerobics piece put together & performed by Newlands Girls School in Maidenhead.
For the club side there was a fencing display
by the Eton College base Salle Eton Fencing Club,
giving the audience an introduction to the sport and display
from one of the Royal Borough's club mark accredited sports clubs.
From the Arts side the audience was treated to singining from Jessica Duncan
one of this years Arts Bursary winners.
As part of the evening guests had the opportunity to listen to celebrities
regarding their experiences in both the Arts & Sports,
hoping to inspire a new generation of stars.
This included all journalists & TV interviewer Will Hodgkinson &
Britains top canoe & salom racer & silver medalist Campbell Walsh.
One of the special guests was the Deputy Mayor Asghar Majeed,
who talked about the relevance of the Cultural Olympiad
leading up to the 2012 games.
The evening also showed the positive work on the local School Sport Partnerships,
with two young ambassadors from each of the Partnerships,
Churchmead in Datchet & Newlands in Maidenhead,
taking it in turns in the role of hosting the evening.
This year the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidnehead Twim Town Team
was also invited to the event, just back from achieving
1st place at the Bi-annual Twin Town event in
St Cloud, France, under the Friendship value.
With the Borough School Sport Partnerships there were 4 awards
given under the Olympics & Paralympics value Inspiration
for outstanding contribution to School Sports & PE.
For the main part of the evening under the Determination value were
the Arts & Sports Bursaries, these included 24 Arts Bursaries,
50 Sports Bursaries & 10 Sports Coach Bursaries.
Activities varied from ballet dancing & performing arts to triathlon & boxing.
The bursaries are match funded by the Louis Baylis Maidenhead Advertiser Charitable Trust,
to support local talent up to London 2012.
The last award of the evening coming under the Excellence value was
awarded to Fred Furneaux for his 34 years of Coaching
football & cricket in the Hurley area.
This is to celebrate his effort and contribution to sport
in the Borough over a number of years.
