Morgan: Hi, I’m Morgan from Chattanooga State, and today we are going to go check out the dance program here at Barking Legs Theater.
Morgan: Tell me a little bit about yourself as a local artist here in Chattanooga, and what you do here at Chattanooga State.
Ann Law: Well I moved to Chattanooga, TN from New York City in 1991. I’ve been an independent free lance dancer since that time. I started working on my masters in dance education in 2004.
Ann Law: About that time the President of Chattanooga State Community College asked me if I would consider starting a dance program at Chattanooga State. I said “absolutely awesome!”
Morgan: So what classes does Chattanooga State offer at your facility?
Ann Law: Well, when I was thinking about designing the program I wanted to do something a little bit different then what most community colleges offer. I kind of wanted to think about how to get a person just involved in dance.
So, I created a dance composition class and a dance performance class. Then I wanted to come up with some really wonderful technique classes like modern dance. Then I thought what other class should we think about? Then I thought about aerial dance. So we are dancing on the ground and off the ground
Morgan: Can you tell us about Amy Powell who teaches these?
Ann Law: Yes, Amy Powell moved into Chattanooga just a short while ago from Athens, GA. She was with one of the leading aerial dance companies in the country called Canopy. She’s teaching aerial dance and aerial dance performance.
Ann Law: Then Monica Moved in and she’s teaching the modern dance portion and also the intro to dance. We also wanted to have an evening program, so if you have been working all day just to kind of cut loose at night.
Ann Law: We got a beautiful lyrical, jazz, hiphop, fusion class that Cornelias teaches. He is another beautiful dancer. Mindy Howard also teaches the American Tribal style belly dance. She does an amazing job!
Ann Law: Then we got African drumming by Kofee. We also have a Pilates class and Monica also teaches a modern class in the evening.
Morgan: How would you recommend the students to get enrolled in these exciting classes?
Ann Law: You know what? I would suggest going on the website chattanoogastate.edu/dance. I would go there and check out the website. Then, you know that all the classes are being held here at Barking Legs Theater which is at 1307 Dodds Avenue. Our phone number there is area code 423 624 LEGS
