I heard this great Alan Watts quote
'When you dance, you don't dance to get to the other side of the room,
you dance because you want to enjoy the journey dancing around here
and eventually you end up over there'.
[HELLICAR AND LEWIS] I'm Joel Gethin Lewis.
[HELLICAR AND LEWIS] And I'm Pete Hellicar.
[HELLICAR AND LEWIS] Together we are Hellicar and Lewis,
and for the last six years we've had a studio together that makes
interactive experiences that uses design to take people into the moment.
[NX-CONSTRUCTED BEHIND THE SCENES]
We've been asked by Lexus to create a digital artwork
that's inspired by the striking angles
and the bold design of the new Lexus NX.
Our first thought was to build a digital kaleidoscope
which is something we have played with quite a lot in the past
but we've never ever built.
The car itself has a very striking design
but the thing that we were most intrigued by were the smaller details.
You can see that there's almost a kaleidoscopic element to it,
and in terms in the way that we are interpreting that.
There's a correlation between the ways that this works graphically
and the way that this works physically.
We find these shapes really interesting,
so we're going to use those as a direct reference
in our kaleidoscope interface.
The shapes and forms within the car, we're definitely going to try and
achieve some of these longer shards
that you see on the side of the vehicle.
There's a blend of both analogue and digital in the quality of the car
and the way it's been designed and been put together.
Using cutting edge materials when they're in their right place.
But then using more kind of, crafted materials
when it's the right time for that,
and we think that synthesis is something that we wanted to echo
in our project.
So taking that form,
taking those animated elements
but then projecting those back into the real world,
and then capture those back into the digital world
and re-synthesizing it into this online digital kaleidoscope.
We projected those images on to various different materials,
different platforms, different surfaces.
We had smoke machines
[ROBBIE NEWBY EDITOR/DOP] giving it another
added element of focal depth and distortion.
We've got analog film processes and projections going in,
but then you can actually pull and warp this kaleidoscope
to then give you these odd abstractions.
What would be amazing would be something that exposes a behavior
that I wasn't expecting.
Something that makes someone do something in a different way.
Or appreciate the world around them in a different way,
that's amazing.
