Hey there! It's Tom Corson-Knowles, No. 1 best-selling author of Schedule your Success
and founder of TCK Publishing. In this video we're going to talk about how
to become a better person I'm gonna show you five simple steps to becoming a
better version of yourself and improving your life in any and every way you want
so before we get into five steps I want to talk about kind of philosophy behind
this and so for me it's really always about becoming the best version of
myself right so instead of trying to think about how can I be more like you
know a role model be more like someone else or be more you know financially
successful or whatever these kind of outside factors and focuses are there's
nothing wrong with whatever your goals are but I think it's super important
that you focus on becoming a better version of you instead of trying to
become more like someone else right so I think a lot of us you know growing
up we learn to have role models we learn to look up to people you know and so we
we look up to other people and we look to our parents or to teachers or to you
know basketball stars or entrepreneurs or billionaires we look to outside
people to get a feeling of what it means to be successful and some of us we've
become so engrained with society's interpretations of success that we
forgot what we really want inside right and so before we get into actually
becoming a better person and making some changes just make absolutely sure the
changes you really want to make the changes you're really trying to make are
actually going to take you down the path you want to go because I've seen so many
people go down this path a path of personal development or personal growth
when what they're really doing is instead of actually embracing who they
are and what they really want they're chasing someone else's dream they're
chasing someone else's life they're chasing someone else's goal and what
happens is you can do that for only so long until you get burnt out you know
you're disillusioned with your life disappointed and you think you know you
look back and like and say you know I worked so hard
trying to make the money trying to make this trying to make that work when it
wasn't really who you were who you wanted to be so make sure that when you
set a goal you set an intention that you're actually following the
that you really want to follow and so that's why step number one the five
steps to becoming a better person step number one is all about awareness you
have to tune in with yourself you have to listen to yourself and find out what
it is that you really want and that's where all great change decisions come
from so instead of trying to find someone else to tell you what to do or
what to change about your life just listen yourself you know one of the
things you say to yourself all the time you say to other people are friends what
are things you say in your mind all the time you usually start think something
like should you know I should lose weight I should write that book I've
been talking about should start that business I've been talking about I
should you know have better relationships yeah I should go out more
I should watch less TV I should do this right and so well you probably have so
much of that mental talk going on in our own minds and you probably say this in
casual conversations with friends all the time you don't even think about all
these things you're saying because it's just like habitual right it's
subconscious and so really start to tune in listen to the language that you're
using in your own mind you know and thoughts and with other people and then
again once again you know once you understand if I that thought like you
know I should lose weight or I should start a business tune in with that and
answer something is that true right is that true for you is that some just some
thought or idea that your parents had or society had or is that really really
true for you and if it's true for your for really resonates you're saying yes I
absolutely I know I really should lose weight you know it's gonna get better
for my health I want to be around for my kids you know all these reasons that
really that one idea that thought inspires you so when you identify that
one thing you want to focus on right now to change your you become fully aware of
that you really start to feel the pain of not changing right so one things that
where it is so important to having awareness is that you have to feel pain
right and on most people we want to avoid pain we won't do anything we can
to avoid pain we want to take drugs or medication or smoke pot or drink alcohol
or you know go party or do all kinds of things to avoid feeling that pain of
what it's like to live a life that's not truly us that's not truly what we want
right and so instead of running away and avoiding that pain we have to learn to
embrace that pain to become truly aware so what does it like to be you right now
thinking you should lose weight thinking you should write that book thinking you
should start that business but not having
done that right what does it feel like to be in that position get really aware
that and start to feel that pain side and it might feel unbearable and hurt
and really bad but that's when you know you've found something that's true for
you right you have to be aware of that pain so that you get that inner
motivation also so you can just let go of all that baggage so many of us we get
so much emotional baggage around you know making a change and so you look at
someone who you know they tried 100 diet plans and they try to quit smoking a
hundred times they tried started business a hundred times or or whatever
it is they tried so many times when people say you know I tried everything I
tried everything and nothing worked usually it's because they haven't
actually gotten connected with themselves they have really become fully
aware of how they're actually feeling about the situation and so when you
start to really tune in with your body and tune in to yourself you're gonna
start to feel some pain and that's absolutely normal and it's good that
means you're ready to change that right because until we get in touch with who
we are and what we really want it's trying to like it's like putting a
bandaid on a huge wound right yeah you can cover it up all you want you can
pretend it's not there you can pretend it's not a big deal you can pretend it
doesn't exist but until you really face the gaping hole inside you that gaping
wound of saying I really want to be healthy I really want to lose weight but
I'm not there yet until you really face that truth and look at yourself in the
mirror and start to say yeah I'm ready to change now that's when things will
change for you so step two is you want to start taking action right so once you
get that awareness once you start to really tune in connect with yourself and
you start to feel that pain and saying that you feel that inner desire that
inner burning to change that's when you want to strike when the iron's hot right
you want to take action right away so just the first thing that comes to mind
to take action on that go out and do that now
right don't wait until tomorrow don't wait until next week don't wait till
next month act right away so you know if it was me and I was overweight and I you
know really had that issue the first thing because I mind I would do it so if
that was first thing was you know I'm gonna take a walk around the block I'd
get up I take a walk around the block I start doing some exercise that day right
and it doesn't have to be a big change right a lot of us we think oh you know
if I've got to start this business now I'd better go out and raise you know ten
million dollars and that is not the first step starting a business right the
first step is never raising money right so you have to just
focus on what is one thing you can do right now what does one thing it easy to
do it shouldn't be complicated become flex and just go do it right away just
take that next action stuff whatever is for you I start to get into action so
then what you want to do after you've taken action is you want to go to the
next step and step number three is changing your environment so what you
want to do is you want to actually turn that awareness and turn that activity
into daily habits and so one of the easiest ways to do that to make sure
that every single day you're aware of the issue you're aware of where you want
to go and you're taking action toward your goals and towards your dreams is a
change your environment so for example if you want to write a book I've coached
a lot of clients who say you know I really want to write a book and what we
really want to get into this daily writing habit but I just can't just seem
to do it I tried everything it just doesn't work I just can't write every
day it doesn't work for me and so I'll say is okay well let's find
a way to change your environment to give you those cues so that you have that
daily habit that daily awareness that need to write and then the daily habit
actually get the job done so one of the things you can do is find out what is
something you're already doing every single day and then tweak it so that you
have to do your new goal your new habit you have to become aware of that change
you're trying to make every single day because you're tying it in to an
existing habit so for example if you use your computer every single day then what
I would do if you wanted to write every day is I would write down I would get a
notebook and I would write down 1,000 words or 500 words or whatever your
daily writing goal is I write that down on the piece of paper on your notebook
and I plop it right on your computer right on your laptop or right on your
keyboard and then that way the first thing in the morning or the first time
you go to your computer that day where you're gonna see you're gonna see this
notebook that says you have to write 500 words a day and then the rule is you
can't use that computer for anything until you get the task done until you
get the job done right you can the same thing with exercising let's say you want
to take a walk you know walk a mile every single day then you put all your
workout clothes get them ready and you put your workout clothes by the front
door and you cannot leave the house until you walk a mile that day right and
so by doing this you set up these cues for success so that every single day
you're um minded of what the problem is what your
action step needs to be to start moving in the right direction and you have that
daily reminder so it's very easy to you know to put your workout clothes by the
front door or to write a note on your notebook to write 500 words a day and
put that in the computer and it's very easy to do that but then you have to
have the consistency in the commitment to every day you see those cues to
actually follow through with that action with that activity and if you do that
you will make massive progress really really quickly and that's we can turn
something that's very hard and very difficult into a habit and once it comes
to habit it's easy to succeed right once it becomes a habit it's very easy to
become successful you know folks who drink coffee every single day for 20
years it's a habit for them right it's not difficult you know to drink coffee
on the 7000 day because they've done it for you know 20 years now it's really
easy for them to do it right and so it's the same thing with goals and dreams
that you want to achieve if you create that habit you create that environment
to support that habit you have that awareness you have the daily activity
it's gonna become a habit and once it comes to habit it's like you don't have
to think about writing a book or taking a walk around the block or eating
healthy or whatever it is you want to do you don't have to think about because
it's become a habit so you have to get to that place where it comes to habit
and you do that with these first three steps now step number four if you really
want to supercharge your success and become a better person so much faster
what do you want to look at is what can you eliminate right what can you
eliminate that's just noise that's blocking up your life as cluttering up
your life to give you the space you need to be more creative to spend more time
being aware alright so many of us we self-medicate right and not just with
drugs not just with alcohol that's just with marijuana we self-medicate with all
kinds of things like TV computer games video games you know maybe for someone
was reading maybe for some of us it's you know playing certain games or
certain hobbies or certain activities and we just do it's just like this this
rut we get into it's just how it begin to him you know we'll watch one TV
series on Netflix and then before we know it we spent the entire day just
watching TV right so the problem with these activities like TV and computer
games and social media is totally addictive right it just gives our brains
like Pavlovian conditioning like you know you you swipe your thumb on
book too short on the newsfeed it's just like getting your brain little hits of
dopamine and serotonin and you're becoming addicted to these activities
and so you know once you watch the first episode of a series you gotta watch the
second one the third and the fourth and the fifth and the sixth and then before
you know it you spend an entire week just watching TV you're just following
this chain of events that someone else created for you instead of following the
life that you really want to live the life that you're destined to live right
so if you want to be successful if you want to have a different life eliminate
the clutter eliminate those that addictive habits those addictive
behaviors that are sucking up your time because think about it when you're
watching you know every single series of Game of Thrones or whatever show you're
watching when you're doing that you're not thinking about you know should you
lose weight should you start that business should you write that book
you're not thinking about that at all you're just totally focused on this show
totally focus on this activity and so it sucks away all potential for awareness
there is no awareness when you watch a TV now you're certainly aware of the
show you're certainly aware of what you know the storyline that you're you're
caught up in or the game you're you're caught up in but you're not aware of
your actual life right you're not aware of your goals and your dreams and so
what happens is so many of us we you know we go to work we work hard every
day then we come home and get stuck inside addictive behavior and then we go
to bed that's our entire life it just worked and addicting I work an addiction
and work in addiction and work in addiction I wonder why we're not happy
why we're not more successful why we aren't you know better off financially
and have better health and so forth it's because there's no space there for step
number one right there's no space for awareness so you have to create space
for awareness right remember we talked about how we're gonna be so painful
getting me really painful to be like okay god I said I was gonna start that
business and five years ago it's gone past and now it's been ten years in us
in 15 years and you just look back on your life and say oh I should have done
that 10 years ago 15 years ago 20 years ago that's painful right that hurts to
look back and like I think all that time I wasted and so it's really easy to just
go and say oh I'm gonna keep watching TV and keep getting stuck in these
addictive behaviors I'm gonna keep doing this what I've been doing because it's
easier right it's not as painful you can forget about the pain you can forget
about being aware of all the things you want to improve in your life and so it's
really easy to get stuck in a happen so don't do that cut out these
behaviorist whatever it is for you ask yourself honestly what is the one thing
I could cut out for my life that would make my life better and not worse and
cut that out and that will give you that space to be more aware so instead of you
know watching TV or whatever it is for you to sit sit with a notebook and paper
and write down you know what are you what are you thinking about what could
you improve in your life what could you make better in your life what could you
do start that business to lose the way to write that book whatever it is your
dreams are start journaling about that and so you get that awareness and you
get more ideas for action and then it's just snowballs you have more awareness
and more action more awareness and more action and more awareness and more
action and that's how you achieve success I know the last step step number
five is we're gonna repeat each step in this process right so this is a process
that's like a cycle you repeat it again and again and again and again and again
and if you stop repeating the cycle you stop growing in life right so if you
stop being aware you're not grown if you stop taking daily action you're not
grown if you stop controlling your environment so make sure that your
environment is taking him the right direction you stop growing and if you
forget to eliminate the things that are sucking up your time your energy in the
space in your life to be aware to be creative to do new things
then again you stop growing right so you have to constantly repeat each of these
steps in the cycle you have to constantly be aware every day you need
to have awareness every day you need a new action every day you need to make
sure that you've patrolling your environment in a way that's leading you
in the right direction and every day you need to make sure that you're
eliminating the behaviors the addictive behaviors the things the social media
the TV the computer games the drugs alcohol whatever it is for you that's
cluttering up your life cluttering up your creativity cluttering up your
awareness so you can focus on what's really important to you right if you say
I want to be a better person I want to lose weight I want to get healthy
whatever that is for you I'm just putting all your time these addictive
behaviors you're not gonna change you're not gonna get better right until you
treat that addiction until you get rid of those bad behaviors you're not gonna
have space to do anything new right because all your time is sucked up and
this activity that you have to do you have to keep repeating the same cycle
over and over and over and over and over again so if you want to become
successful it's the same thing you got to repeat a cycle over and over and over
again except the cycle you're gonna repeating is the cycle we just talked
about now right the awareness the action of the environment eliminating bad
behaviors you know taking that walk around the block
everyday eating healthier exercising starting that business writing every day
that's the cycle you want to get in so you want to repeat that cycle again and
again and again and again the good cycle not the addictive cycle right so you
have to break the addiction and start the addiction to your success to your
dreams to the life you really want to live that's how you become successful
it's not complicated it's not easy but it's not really complicated right so you
can look at your life right now after this video get a pen a paper a notebook
out say you know what do I really want from my life what you know what it where
am I to have pain in my life what I want to improve in my life and you can figure
out you know a hundred different action steps you can take right now to move
your life in the right direction the only question is are you gonna do it
right so I challenge you I urge you to do this put these five steps into action
in your life every single day it will change your life forever but you have to
commit to it you have to break the addictive cycle and start a new cycle of
improving your life and becoming a better person become the person you
really want to be with your life so if you're willing to invest the time and
getting clear on what you really want with your life and you follow these five
steps you will be successful right because you're gonna get in that right
cycle that virtuous cycle and your path of your life is gonna be up and up and
up and up and up and better and better and better day after day week after week
month after month year after year after year
that's how success compounds right it's old saying you know the rich get richer
successes people get more successful it's true it's absolutely true because
they're in this cycle right there in the not the cycle of addiction the cycle of
improvement the cycle of growth cycle of personal development so you have to get
into that cycle where your life just goes up and up and up and that's how you
