Ask me another question, Kristen.
Um ...
This one is from Sean Resser:
What kind of things did you do to get over your stutter?
Hmmm. Um ...
Well, really, I didn't do anything except follow the advice of my teacher
Fred King.
And, um ...
Fred was an amazing guy. He was a high school music teacher. He was sort of like
Mr. Holland, you know?
In that Mr. Holland's Opus thing.
And one day
he made me audition for a play
and I kinda stammered through the monologue
and then he sorta stopped me halfway through it, and he said, "Mike,
you know, you're doing great, but this character, he doesn't stutter ...
so,
try it again, only this time, just lose the stutter."
And without even thinking about it, I did it.
And so,
My stammer as a kid had had
really nothing to do a physical thing. It was
just in my head
and that was the moment it got cured. I actually did a podcast
about that story, and it's still out there somewhere
if you Google "Fred King Mike Rowe Podcast" you can hear the whole story.
It's long
but it's heartfelt and you'll laugh. I think. Possibly. Or cry. Either way.
I'll link to it from Facebook. No, you won't. You're never going to listen to it.
No, I am. Really?
Good. Excellent.
