Dame June Mariu has been chosen to serve as the 1st patron
of NZ's largest Maori public health body.
She was appointed by the King himself.
Oriini Tipene-Leach has this report.
The Royal Warrant of King Tuheitia bestowed on Dame June Mariu,
to serve on his and all of Maoridom's behalf
as the lead voice of Maori health.
It's a true honour.
I couldn't pass it up because it's something I'm very passionate about.
She's the first to be appointed as Patron of Hapai Te Hauora Tapui,
the largest Maori Public Health body in NZ.
She's a leader -
how she holds herself, how she speaks,
she's always calm.
She's the right person for this role.
Te Ara Ha Ora is a major project led by the service,
aiming to ensure all Maori communities are smoke free by 2025.
Hapai Te Hauora Tapui first approached the King
to take on the role as their Patron,
but he personally appointed Dame June on his behalf.
There are so many issues that have yet to be dealt to,
this is just one of them, but today, it has come full circle.
But there are many more to be addressed.
Dame June is determined to get into her new role,
which effectively starts today.
