What's really frustrating about hate speech and freedom of speech -
is what can be seen in political debate too.
It feels like you can't really get a grip on hate speech.
You're accused of limiting freedom of speech -
if you say it's not okay to call people a gay *** ***.
People immediately say:
"You can't tie me down and tell me what I can and can't do" -
or "it was sarcasm".
First, people spit it all out -
and when it's investigated there's always an excuse -
why the original message is not -
what it sounded like to those receiving it.
People often ask me what I think of the word "***".
To me, it only has negative connotations -
in everything I associate it with.
Then I have to debate with people who were taught the word in school.
They think they should still be allowed to use the word.
It's so pointless. Why can we not consider the target?
If I tell you it doesn't feel nice -
can we just let go of the word and move on?
The same goes for hate speech and political debate.
The rhetoric kind of borders on racism.
When someone states it out loud, the opposition will just proclaim:
"I have to have the right to say this. It's not what you hear."
