Niger inaugurates new president. Following peaceful elections in March and a 58% win
of the popular vote, Mahamadou Issoufou was sworn in as president of the Republic of Niger
on Thursday, April 7. Welcomed by crowds of fellow citizens, the long-time pro-democracy
leader and former prime minister conveyed his thanks for their patient sacrifices in
helping bring about the country's successful democratic reforms. He also acknowledged the
country' military, who declared the first day of his presidency a national holiday as
it brought to a hopeful end a previous 14 months of caretaker government rule.
Our respectful congratulations, President Issoufou, on your new role. May your leadership
be graced to further ever expanding peace and prosperity for your country and fellow
