Sup, guys, and welcome back to The Real Guns of Battlefield 4. Today's weapon is the M16A4,
an American assault rifle designed in 1957 by Eugene Stoner at ArmaLite. The M16 is designed
using a gas powered rotating bolt. In-game, the M16A4 has the standard assault
rifle damage profile: 18-25 damage with the drop-off between 8 and 55 meters. The muzzle
velocity is 650 meters per second under normal circumstances and 340 meters per second when
a suppressor is attached. The cyclic rate of fire of the weapon is 800 rounds per minute.
The projectile falls at 15 meters per second squared. The in-game weapon fires the 5.56
NATO cartridge, and uses a 30 round magazine plus a chambered round. The recoil pattern
on this weapon pulls strongly to the right and quickly moves upwards. Reloads take 1.8
seconds with at least one round remaining and 2.37 seconds when the weapon is completely
empty. In real life, this weapon comes with a 508
mm barrel, a point-target effective range of 550 meters, a muzzle velocity of 948 meters
per second, and a cyclic rate of fire that varies anywhere between 700 and 950 rounds
per minute. The cartridge the weapon fires is the standard 5.56 NATO cartridge. Magazines
for this weapon are available in three sizes: 20 rounds, 30 rounds, and the 100 round Beta
Century-magazine. Like the M416 we have already covered, the
M16A4 is an AR-15 pattern weapon. It is the standard issue weapon in the United States
Marine Corps. Like the in-game weapon, the weapon fires only in semi-auto and three-round-burst
as standard issue. However, models are available that will fire in fully-automatic. The direct
impingement system used in the M16 has led to many reliability issues with the M16 and
its variants over the years in the military, and several programs have been started to
create and evaluate potential replacement weapons for the US military. Among these programs
was the Objective Individual Combat Weapon program started by the US Army. Although it
led to the creation of the XM8 rifle by Heckler & Koch, it was discontinued after the army
was unimpressed with the improvements over the established AR-15 platform. The SOF Combat
Assault Rifle or SCAR program has created the SCAR rifle, also known as the Mk 16, though
budget concerned have largely led to a scrapping of the Mk 16 in favor of the heavier SCAR-H
or Mk 17. The HK416 or M27 is a potential replacement weapon, as it is already used
in the Light Support Weapon role in the Marine Corps. The M4A1, though directly based on
previous M16 designs, and still utilizing direct impingement, is already largely slated
to replace the M16 in most branches of the US military. Additionally, the LSAT, an experimental
caseless ammunition belt-fed weapon is a potential replacement giving many of the advantages
of traditional LMGs over assault rifles while remaining comparatively light.
Realism-wise, the M16A4's range is 90% different from its real-life counterpart. The muzzle
velocity is 31% different. The cyclic rate of fire is entirely within the tolerances
of the physical weapon. The difference in bullet drop is standard for assault rifles
at 53%, and the magazine is identical to the actual weapon. Overall, the weapon in Battlefield
4 is only 35% different from the real-life weapon. That will have to be it for this time,
but I hope you guys enjoyed. If you did enjoy, I encourage you to like, favorite, and subscribe,
and I'll see you next time. Thanks for watching.
