Sandra Joseph: I volunteer because it truly completes my soul.
More than anything, I get joy. It is such a joy in my heart to come here and help others
with whatever I can my helping hands, my service, my companionship, my ear to hear
someone with and talk to, my shoulder to cry on. Its just a joy. I leave here so heartfelt,
so heartfelt.
Basically, I bake cookies for the patients and I make coffee. I have a reception area
up here and I have a reception area in the back where patients get their treatments.
I also talk to the patients. I converse with them on whatever topic they want. Sometimes
they tell me about their personal lives, their children, or they just want to talk about
the world. Thats what Im here for, to make them feel comfortable and to be here
for them. I also give warm blankets to them while theyre waiting for their appointments.
Sandra to patient: If theres anything else I can do, let me know.
These patients are courageous; theyre so courageous and strong. Everyone comes in with
a smile; even if you know they dont want to be here, they come in with a smile, so
Ill be darned if Im not going to give that same smile back, no matter what kind
of day Im having.
Its all about your inner being, how you feel about yourself and how you feel about
doing something for someone else. Thats what we should be doing in this life. We should
always be doing things for someone else, whether its a family member, a friend, or someone
in a professional facility like this.
