for education, a 14-year-old Afghan girl in a bus filled with terrified schoolchildren
was singled out and shot in the head and neck by masked Taliban gunmen. The group claims
the girl’s crusade for education was an obscenity. The girl is still in a coma at
a military hospital but hopes for her recovery are bright. However, a Taliban spokesman said
that if she survives, she will be targeted again.

shelling inside Turkey.
British guitarist Eric Clapton sold an abstract painting by German painter Gerhard Richter
out of his private collection in London for $34 million, or 10 times the price Clapton
paid for it in 2001. The painting was appraised by Southeby’s auction house before the bidding
began at $14-$19 million. The final bid was a record price for a painting by a living
artist.
When Max Igoe was 5 years old, his mom’s best friend died of breast cancer. Without
really understanding what happened, the little boy said that he wanted to make some money
to help doctors cure the disease. So the kindergartner opened a lemonade stand and now, for the 9th
consecutive year, will do it again. So far, he’s raised $80,000 and has a goal of $1

Icheon is famous for producing high-quality rice and this marks the 14th annual festival
in the Gyeonggi Province city. A variety of events related to rice and agricultural traditions
and customs will be held from Oct. 25-28. The festival’s highlight will be cooking
rice in a huge iron cauldron and then serving 2,000 bowls with kimchi and Korean red pepper
paste gochujang to hungry guests.
