Hi I'm Joey Arcaro. And I'm Savannah Ridgley.
And welcome to season three's final show. In today's episode we have a thought provoking
look into the new transgender bathroom law, Our very own James Lawrence with some challenging
Christmas trivia, and some highlights from last week's football
game, and a few more fun filled surprises.
Del Oro is one of the many schools affected by the new transgender bathroom law.
Huffington Post has called it one of the most controvercial laws that California has passed
this year. Our reporter Jordyn Carlson will give us a
look at this complex issue. Beginning January 1st, 2014 transgender students
can, by law, go in the bathroom they fell they belong in.
According to multiple studies there are likely only about 5 or 6 students at Del Oro who
are transgender. We talked to some students and teachers about
how they feel.
I feel like schools should be a safe environment and that a school has a responsibility to try to make it as safe as possible from outside
influences, from inside. Everything as far as bullying, self confidence, the schools
should try to be as accomodating as it can to help students. It might mean that there
is one bathroom that will be like many bathrooms in workplaces around America, a bathroom where
both genders can use - bi-gender bathrooms. Just for the comfort of like girls and guys
alike it would be a problem. I think short term honestly I don't think
our school has a huge problem with this. I can't see any shot term effects really.
I feel like it would generally corrupt the main kind of segregation we have.
In the short term people would probably be a little bit weirded out by it, but in the
long run, everyone's going to get used to it.
You know, basically what the district is going to do it to ensure that every student has
a safe learning environment, whether it's transgendered youth or others.
The law was passed when I was out of the country but my mom emailed me about it. It was cool
because I was following it to see where it was going to go.
Some of the short term issues are people just get nervous about the unknown about how this
is going to look like.
Del Oro will be working hard over the next few months to make sure all students feel comfortable with this law.
Thanks guys. Well this is it.
Wait, what? The final Joey vs Eagle episode.
Hey Eagles, it's been exceptional contesting you guys, but unfortunately it's time for
me to retire. But before I give up my title, I have a couple things I need to do. Firstly,
I'd like to thank my editor, friend, and overall video wizard, Avery Peck for all he's done
over this series. Without him, none of this could have happened. Secondly, I have one
more challenge. i challenge you, yes you, to be the very best that you can be. Freshman
year, I struggled. Actually, that's an understatement. I was self-loathing, fearful and a quitter.
But as the years progressed, I found strength in my gifts. i found that I mattered and that
I can make a difference. It wasn't my body, my brain, or my social status that was hindering
me, but the fear of being weak. Eagles, I challenge you to be fearless. You have the
power to make change in your own lives, and in everyone else's. Eagles, you can make a
difference, you can enjoy your youth, you can succeed. And adulthood is just in reach.
You have the power to make this world great and beautiful. Thank you for supporting me
and Joey vs. Eagle. You have been my inspiration, and I hope I can be yours. For the last time,
goodbye. Back to you guys. Wow, that was inspiring.
I'm going to miss that Joey guy. I'm not.
With the fall season coming to an end, our sports team is recapping this season in sports
as well as reporting on last week's football game against the amazing team from Serra.
Let's see what they have to say. Hey Del Oro, I'm Daynon Matthews.
And I'm Alden Volle and it's time for the season finale of Del Oro Sports.
But hey, let's go out with a ***. With this being our last episode, we would
state. Congrats Abby. Also our boys water polo team
in the state. Varsity soccer also took down Rocklin during
rivalry week as well as a number of other tough teams.
As everybody knows, our boys varsity football team killed it all year, winning section championships
and playing in the state championship this Friday against Bakersfield. Here's a little
recap of the past season. In the CIF Northern California Regional Championship,
Del Oro played Serra creating a dogfight of a game.
To start off the 1st quarter, running back Dylan Kainrath scored a 26 yard touch down,
breaking 4 tackles putting Del Oro ahead 7-0 with 8 and a half minutes left. But Serra
came back with QB Matthew Fa'aita too a quarterback keeper 10 yards to the touchdown ending the
quarter 7-7. That brings us to the second period when Dylan
Kainrath came through once again with a 77 yard run, setting up tight end Tyler Meteer
with a 22 yard touchdown catching it over the defender.
But soon thereafter Serra sophomore running back Kelepee La'atiakua came with a touchdown
off a reverse tying the game at 14-14. But in the last 3 seconds of the half, quarterback
Michael Moore threw a cross field pass to receiver Therin Heryford putting the Eagles
up 21-14 at the end of the half. After the half Serra was forced to put from
their own 6 yard line. That's when sophomore Trey Udofia took it all the way back making
the score 28-14. But Serra came back with 2 field goals. The first 8 yards away and
the second 18. That brings us to the 4th quarter. Although
there was no scoring it seemed to be an endless battle. After the game we caught up with Steve
Birch and Dylan Kainrath to talk about their great win.
Yeah, we felt good coming to the game. It's tough when you are playing a team that you
don't know much about. They're in another section so going in you don't know how good
they were and you know what, they were a great team and we just played really hard tonight.
Our guys made plays when it counted and we came out with a victory.
I feel amazing, you know, we get to go to State - anyone should want to be doing that
and it's finally here my senior year. It's great for all the seniors and the whole team.
We also caught up with black hole leader Isaac Jorgensen to talk about next week's State
Game. The game is on Friday down in LA. We need
you there. Failure comes in many shapes and colors but there are two colors that it doesn't
come in and those colors are black and gold. We're not going to change that this weekend.
See you at state. So everybody be sure to catch up with your
favorite football player and tell them good luck before they leave tomorrow.
This will be the seniors' very last high school football game so we need the biggest black
hole Del Oro has ever seen to cheer on our boys.
Well, as the end of the semester winds down, we'd like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas
and we hope you enjoyed this season of Salt and Peppa Sports.
I'm Alden Volle, and I'm Daynon Matthews.
Incredible season guys. It's not over yet. this week we are heading
to State and a few local businesses have offered to donate a portion of their proceeds to help
pay for the transportation of our own Del Oro band and cheer squads.
So that means today, you need to head down to The Yogurt Shop after school and buy as
much yogut as you can possibly eat. And how long has it been since you have eaten
5 learge pizzas? Well attempt it tomorrow at the Pizza factory between the hours of
5 and 9. That's right. Today, the yogurt shop is donating
a portion of their sales to support DO and tomorrow it's the Pizza Factory. So make sure
to make your way to these businesses and show your support.
We've also received a very special present for one of our viewers. Rose Nelson, take
a look at this. Hi, I'm chaplain Des Nelson, deployed to Afghanistan
and I'm Rose Nelson's father. And I just want to say Hi Rose. merry Christmas. I hope you
have a Happy New Year. I miss you very much and I can't wait to get home and see you.
have a great day. I love you. Bye bye. Finally, our news team for Season Three would
like to say our own goodbyes. Goodbye Del Oro.
And you stay golden Eagles.
