Did you buy into the lie that there’s no more good domain names left?
I’m Denise O’Berry and you’re watching the “Little Big Show.”
Your place for bite size tips that can have a big impact on your bottom line.
So you’ve decided to get your own domain name, so that you can have a presence on the
web. Yes, congratulations to you.
You visit your favorite domain registrar, type in the domain name that you want and
back comes the result. Taken.
Alright, so you type in your next choice for a domain name and you get the result.
Taken. And this continues over and over again.
Oh my gosh! What do you do?
First of all, don’t get discouraged. There are plenty of good domain names yet.
You just have to find the right one for your business.
It’s time to put on your thinking cap. Now, one important point to remember is that
your domain name does not have to match your company name.
It’s a better idea to focus on your services or products and their benefits.
Many of the people that are surfing the webs aren’t going to have any idea what your
company name is anyways. They’re going to be using search terms in
order to find things that will solve their problems and that website should be you.
Here’s what you need to do. Before you begin searching for domain names,
put together a list of your services, your products, and their benefits.
Then take that entire list and make up some two or three word combinations that might
be possible domain names. Distill that list down to five or ten possible
names. You’re going to want to give it a special
test. I call this my four-point test.
#1 Is it as short as possible, while still getting across your message about what you
do? #2 Is it easy to say?
Say it out loud, like you’d be telling someone your domain name over the telephone.
#3 Would someone understand it over the telephone without you having to spell it out.
#4 Is it easy to type? Practice it on your keyboard a time or two.
If you can answer all the questions in this four-point test with a yes, then you’re
ready to go. So what you want to do is you want to take
the domain names that all have four yeses and narrow it down to find your possibilities.
Then hop on over to your favorite domain service and get that name reserved right now.
Have you bumped into a problem when trying to reserve just the right domain name?
How did you resolve it? Please share your thoughts in the comments
