Domotics applied to a Water System
Home owners at this development in Rome.
are provided with integrated heating/cooling, hot water, drinking water
and grey water for gardens, all managed through a domotics system.
All of this is monitored and controlled and managed by what we could call an
electronic management system. The famous “industrial automation”.
All the probes, all opening of the valves are controlled by the program which we have
loaded into the domotics system. At the same time we are recording the user’s
share of the costs for the different services.
The costs for grey water, the costs for hot water, the costs for cold drinking water.
All these services are accounted for and are centralised. Basically, there is a system,
a server where all the data is sent and one can see how long the system’s been on
and at what the temperature and then the overall consumption, which is shared out.
Each apartment has its own meter and the costs are allocated to the individual apartment.
We can see what the trends are, for example the trend in hot water consumption
an overall picture, not the minute by minute distribution of the water.
The water for distribution is held in two or three tanks, some at high temperature, some lower.
When, in simple terms, the hot water level in the main tanks begins to fall, we increase
the levels in the standby tanks. But we don’t keep all the unused water at 60-70 degrees
so practically no energy is wasted. We try to keep a thermal gradient between the
various tanks, and we do this through a building automation (domotic) system.
It’s an “intelligent” system to control what happens with the standby tanks.
This is a local control panel. All this data is circulated using internet protocols
to a remote computer.
It can even be viewed on a smart phone.
Each apartment has its own domotic programming unit.
And their consumption of different types of water is displayed,
including water used for underfloor heating and cooling.
