I'm Kelly
Langston and thank you for joining me for
this little very informal chat about what I found to be
the greatest therapy for autism. Just to tell you a little bit about myself
I a mother of a child who happens to have autism
I wrote a book in 2009 called
Called Autism's Hidden Blessings. It's a book
about discovering God's promises
for just autistice children and their families
I'm also a contributing writer forwww.not-along.org. It's a wonderful
special needs community that is designed to encourage
families who have a child one or more than one child
with a special needs. We have gathered together to support each other
and we talk about
how to make the journey as a special needs parent a victorious journey
all based on what scripture has to
teach us
about God's scriptureal promises and wonderful things that we can learn
in the Bible that can make the journey and
a joyful one sheesh now that sounds hard
and saying that journey with a special need or junior with autism can be each
joyful I would tell you that it is entirely possible
I double EE at guy created
every child with purpose I think fish
and we each have it very special purpose
a guide she given purpose in our lives
and green child I'm meet autism
in his life's journey like my son Alec
listen I do not believe that out to them
or any other special me can ever hinder
she God's ability each to have them have this
wonderful life or purpose despite whatever disability that they are
dealing with like autism
I'm so confident that I'm that actually I'm gonna tell you a little bit about
I'm little bit about my story she and in little bit about
the greatest there H and how many because
I'm so excited about what God can do
to help our kids or anything that we have to be unless
actually even if we had a line is they're looking for cash at their peak
but and specifically addressing pairs and special needs kids and my chest
happens be an autism spectrum but ish
there came a point in our life when we at were suffering
and some financial difficulties in fact they're great financial difficulties
she and retain the whole story first so
just can't sit back and just let me come to go through this with the in your kind
should get a sense if why I sure
she that guy can meet you wherever you are with whatever you have to do
offer your child am as far as it air
H if he had this one thing and the one thing is what I want to teach you and
and share with you she just to give you a little bit how r goin each
in 2003 leave us to this
reach I'll my son was yes he was n
two-and-a-half years old and he was and having let difficulty each
and add he went a little mad this morning at preschool
I'm they could not deal with them he had tantrum after tantrum after 10 Jan
I'm could not speak and
dairy difficult transitioning am
in and out of the classroom sheesh in at a car
in at the grocery store just a
transitions and John are more just really hard experiences forest
so alum when did the teacher came to me and his little and preschool class
in his mother's morning after them and said sheesh and
Kelly I think that you're sending its be tested
and I said what are you talking about and she said I think
that you sent me to be tested for a learning disability
and you know I guess
I should have expected this because I knew that there were issues that my son
was happening
having a new coach he was having many teenagers in class
I'm and new he was not following
directions sheesh and I'm but I
refuse to believe that my son had anything wrong with
any I just at was in a state of denial personally I have to admit that he I was
she our own but we came home
any traded out which and I remember said he's not a lawyer
watching Idol Top nice n he's walking around ranch
and I said to him Alec Alec
Alec Catholic
and every time
I says maybe when even look at his mother
and all the sudden it hit me hatch
yes there was some a
squad by signing and as mom I needed to find out
well at first I was angry at that teach you for coming in and then
talking to me about a possible problem Alec
but she really left: is looking back now because at he did go through testing
sheesh he was diagnosed with at the time PDK each
in a class which stands for I'm
persuasive demand PDMS it's been so long
I asked about what basically just without throughout this lingo
what it means is he was an *** like kinda look at your where they could be
quite classify and
as artistic but you know
it there's so many kids now that have been diagnosed with piano SNH
what's going on out there country looking at that yes just give them the
autism
and diagnosis she can in later years and get them to you and your child is seeded
give them that missus as he was artistic
teach so this was back in 2003
and my husband and I had barely limited resources
hit I speed hours
looking and searching the internet trying to find a couch
what kind therapy could help my son
I was obsessed with trying to find out
what new their Beach at could
could just how I send them to speak at help my son interact
sheesh could only teaching these things I just couldn't get through to lunch
we tried so many different things it started out when
honey because I just loved research I it was reading from
well then home minister talked about having it difficult child
which at first I thought that's all that my son was was when it is difficult
at children each and what discount this was teaching was that you need to have
this
really strong a I'm
need no holds barred said regulations and each
you had a could bring your child in order well as yon
so that and you get older you get what you a deal with them
you need to break this strong well early in life well let me tell you
my son was not disturbed what child he has also them
sheesh but in my and naive state
trying to figure things out I didn't catch this and
we tried that we tried that and okay timeout sector
you up there I can trim want any get a time out on steps inch
this strongly that we came my husband and I each
reformist the week we're going to do this together we were going to bring in
line together that the more and more
sheesh at we and tried to set down the rules
former am I want to be a they were sick
he was lately a be coming
just an emotional wreck and so was I
that in part she so then we found that what we were dealing with that we found
that out one
others inspector inch began being obsessed wit
ninety any kind air out there and believe me if your parish
but the child with autism you know there are
two houses affair means that people are telling me about the time you can't
learn about everything
and from things that have I wanna documentation behind
a TH which is one thing that we heard was a
great European very much wanted to get that to my sack which
I want to some things that that we're not very well tested
hemorrhage but you know when you're desperate your bones look and anything
and I think if your parent in this situation I was a backbench
you can relate to that great so I wanted to chime at night we said we would try
anything that we each
new was a safe fear p for Alec
and one thing that we really wanted to do was am ATA
which is applied behavioral analysis and different names for it now ***
it basically a series a teaching a child
ship by breaking down at the task very small task and there's a lot of data
that you take
whether they're getting interact and Shh the problem with ABA is it's
tremendously
expense sheesh and what we were reading
online was that a.m. seriously
and I look just the other day sheesh and what and
I didn't speak sakhalin I believe if I'm right that they're
a saying I love it
takes about between 40 and 60 house in she to
here me too I'm provide
therapies for a chat with us in best Sh
basically looking around the internet extended way what it
them out is she only sir and he didn't have that much
I love it's that I was crying out to God I knew that believed in a banh
I i believe that was a way to get to actually can to help go and his world
and start teaching and teaching outlook
sheesh now we have very limited resources so every day and I'm
pray and asking God to meet this
and with what we had I don't we were very stressed out but
all week don't buy it the recommended 40 hours a week
at the time we can only provide 10+ hours a week
that I had during that time
again teach me something
I just really want to share with you
an itch the reason why I'm here because
I became beloved guilt that I couldn't provide all the therapies that a
and heard some of my friends at
had more funding and I did and they can't provide many
think they did hyperbaric chambers which and some other than that and for their
homes and it was tens of thousands of dollars and each
I am hold these things that had
hand that when I was reading it now sheesh which ladies have staying in the
head
so many people working on these great stories that I couldn't do that and i
felt like
terrible matter at work I began teaching me
why is that I needed to teach Lake
through love and therefore you know kind in
shut me out I want to tell you about
the greatest air p had
biggest impact and where my son is today
and that therapy is love it don't shut me out because I can tell you that this
is that most powerful their be
out there if they want their be that every other therapy that you can afford
it should be
founded on it she based on how much and it's free
levy I have learned this the hard way because why I was so stressed out about
what it could provide a ***
have began working I'm with this
day by day she in everyday interactions
teach me all that power lauch and how that could change my son and
and his future own and it happened on the day by day basis
he an have to Scripture and studying the Bible I begin to learn how
love is such a powerful thing it can change
hun the way we see things she
I'm only concept
that I really can't wait is
that everyone is gone to a wedding has heard
love chapter a cramped the ins sheesh I'm
love is patient love is kind well
I began looking at love is patient love is kind it began looking at all those
things
and I'm but not in the context and
Mary in context and how I love my son
he began just letting him where he was
what excess and that's something that scripture Tammy
began accepting him as US today
and said the beach when I started to enjoy my son
just as he was I was always looking at him
and being filled with sorrow about what might have been
if he didn't have autism what could he have done
if this wasn't the journey we were walking I think and enjoying life with
him
right we're we were on that day
sheesh in the beginning he didn't even say mama
he he he was 3 I think the for a time he said mama
and it was all of your hand gestures it was our home
heads and things she it was difficult it was hard
I want it more it was a slow progress
a getting 27 dramatic improvements
I'm step-by-step guide came alongside is the journey
sheesh entire this what love was all about
not only did he teach me your requests I'm
the greatest lesson that my life is loving someone just as they are
unconditionally %eh had taught me you alec
how to do that I became a better person at not just a better mom better
percentage
that have watched for example
when we each out was important four years old he went to a special preschool
that has space program artisans
very extensive each we get only go three days a week and said it
all right that you were supposed to go and after one year
is very hopeful the wickedness for it to go next year
so is face the public school and
and I great door please provide some funds for us to be affected
to go to ash especially as cool to hear all these great things about it
sheesh and the answer was no we did not receive
and a environs sheesh home that God
gave us a promise that he will be with us he will never leave you or forsake
you
what he did something even more amazing what got it forrest was
he began to I'm lining up
teachers for out in public school I can't tell you
and number fantastic teachers who
love that I like just as well as they accept that Alec
it came alongside at each they pushed out when I was television images could
be pushing anymore remember church
at getting out like at a train he was and
going on I before that happened which is sold sheesh
for you know at your typical a rich
but I i thought net he's not going to do it that there was a teacher that was
pretty 17
yes H any he needed
and where I whenever I would get weak
gotta bring someone along side me a teacher or a teacher's assistant
or even every mom that hun to the strong
here's the cool any because in
how it was in this hostile situation I V NC
Catholic change lives around him
and here I began to see where his an
autism was no way gonna stand in the way of his purpose
got being able to use that's happened in my anyway she and he did
wherever how it went to that school he is that he is work with him
and it was an I would get these letters fam
which from parents that came in contact with Alec and
each kids who said that they've learned about friendship page
any the Alex French and then you say that every day was easy
it wasn't there are times when he was picked I'm at home
there were times we have teacher that really didn't didn't hear
hate to say that that sheesh and I'm and I have to say that they didn't care bit
we struggled with it
that limit most part even when that happened that provide it away
are added to get what he did and
how it graduated a.m. well the year before last from elementary school
when he started kindergarten my biggest prayer for Alec
what's that he would be able to make it to you
kindergarten in just the other day make you can you burn
and had serious hatch about that
and the end love is
and day great year he graduated from elementary school
Beach very hot out there and
I'm I was sitting there in if you've got a child is
in you graduation ceremony and you have a chat with others in the
happy birthday sheesh I'm boy they were giving at least words
you know mass athletic and honor roll when the
you know top scholar and all these things and
you know year after year you just can't sit back you're right
you clap ish that here fifth-grade
and I'm that's how the war was for its sister ship word
and i sat there and her impacts me nothing that was cool
about that citizenship whereas the kids that it's already
and so my biggest fear was that
alone telugu ever stayed in that somehow you have some friends
and here I was watching that dream come true
that even though we haven't had the funds to provide therapies
that I thought was so important and they are important if you can afford them
and that we couldn't and I stop beating myself up
she and just loved ethnic with all my heart
and here house watching him sexy I was watching these genes began to come cheer
and it was amazing to me am
during those years I read the book artisans hidden blessings and I wrote it
sheesh because I would pray and Alex
inside at night before I can even talk and I would say
guy issue teach me how to be the best mom
this kid can have she the best mom for him
specifically for athletes teach me happy mom cuz I just don't know
I don't know what you need you can talk to me should if you can teach me that
and show me what this is all about and show me what your purpose is for this
boy
if you'll make em is prayer for him a sick
would make it all the man that he intended to be each
all the mean that God intended out to be if you can do that
then it out lol the people about
it that way to me up said I'm she well that's where am here
because he was faithful to that there Abbas it
every single promised that that I learned about in Scripture
so much that I wrote a chapter as does that fold the province's
s crucial problems that got top Meech
and the concert was dan and
in and the promise and crosses at
me see here Street give you the chapters sheesh
and at promise I am every fresh mint
at comes up for renewal when I was just so tired that I didn't think I could go
another day
and I'm and para loves the Proms what like
do and warm because perhaps in the future and help
let you hurt that skip church that God and
comes to give us a purpose and if you choose not to harm me that for
for good have believed that and I think that
a.m. over my son that that will teach you sheesh
and i would tell you that every single from its
got was faithful to and we're not there yet
you know it's still a long journey each we have good days and bad days
sheesh but what I saw was the level
Julie in my life spite that he had no money
fish we're going through a financial crisis economic tell you
and max an entrepreneur and so my inch and
when the economy bottomed out in 2000 8 he just started business
we had no to me we had
have any business come in and they really have to pay if they have a table
and all this time try and take care my son inch hun
the I want to tell you that he he provided even wind
we didn't have very many in every week have provided each
in here's what's interesting about that when I wrote the book
I wrote happen headline that said it's loud
is all we had together are child Benghazi to which
that love was enough when I didn't expected with it did you know
was that guy was going to I'm prove that
can i watch when I wrote it it was something that will be
it wasn't pretty I had prudish
His presence and His power many times through trials
I'm he shows us that is faithful she interface
is increased in hard times so
I'm not saying that at tell your story everything was easy
me too it was the match we had many hard times church
but can you tell you neck out there
every single tanks even in the desert years that I thought would never
and he was there 10
hasn't said much less years am
sign it that his worries chair teach the Bible says
all the promises in Christ are yes
so every single promise that you find in Scripture
I'm eighty study tiny study it
I'm so hot here black
in what he did is he what's for ginger Spurgeon says
at the great deal again said that if you
treated promise when a gas prices you treat it like a check
just like if you're d be given this check
four thousand dollars I don't you
what I think I'm at least you see let me change
semana paramagnetic
area I'm you have to believe that *** is good in order to walk into the bank
in actually catch it it's the same with a promise
I can take forms that every inspection just squirreled away and never acted on
it
already believe that it's true my whole lackluster
to believe in act that that promise that I just read is true
that we can count on it 9 read the cat will provide for our needs
I don't have to go to bed and and toss and turning
worry not leave me hennelly this do that
have done that just tossed in turn because I didn't work
to Mars daybreak but thats really not believing that bad book for
by things that we each it from says that because when I began to see that
and I really believed it when you read this is what I can see this right now
around me but
we trust the have that your work is chill
and 1 guest it get a good night's sleep you know what
it did you know what I'm still here either by
home so it's just an amazing thing
now 28 proved accurate trial
went through literally having nothing
to get worse and it seems that there all he did get will say that he didn't get
help in public school
on he s in resources in public school but there are very limited
assist them maybe twenty to forty hours aquatic
for it twenty four you minutes I'm sorry a couple times week
so the eight-minute but
an what's
what we could give him his life
immensely we gave them and I look at that point now
and he amazes me he still is on the spectrum
he still struggles and that we was troubled homeowners
and said levitt and I'm and right now we don't have any
I speak sq I mean when that when it gets
temper temper temper ago year ago but
I'm he's amazing
he is on so far with only love
and that's really what I wanted to share with you today
went to share that I'm here today
tell you that love if you're a parent
the child with his best me and if you're staying at
a try and figure out how to pay for all these therapies
I'm well what you gonna do
how in its him this is the whole heart
what I want a give your child the very best Itsuki
nothing dual-core right he's give him the very best that you can
and and and look into it and do some research and funny
on safe therapies that you believe I am you can afford
and if it's not and I I know if you're like me you're gonna be have this
nagging thought that it's not enough
it's not a nap listen you get got
go is a board missus all I have never been interested you can meet us there
what we have in your in class it and then a trust guide

every bit what you create it turn out to be

I'm going to swell to me because I know
that it's in heat this might sound so
easy fit that you have one of our might sound like
