AFTER A LONG DAY OF WORK, GUMARO RODRIGUEZ NOW BEGINS HIS SECOND
JOB,RAISING CATTLE ON HIS FARM IN PURDY MISSOURI
((NATS-FEEDING THE COWS))
FARMING IS HIS PASSION Its not just money, I mean, I like doing
it.
THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION CREATED A PROGRAM THAT WORKS WITH
LATINOS IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI WHO WANT TO FARM.
There is some people out there, some Latinos, that
they do want to do it, but they dont have the
resource to do it. They dont have the information to
do it, or they dont even know where to go.
THE PROGRAM CONNECTS THESE FARMERS WITH VARIOUS LOCAL AND
NATIONAL RESOURCES
One of the reasons the Latino farmers are going in
and out of the business rather quickly, we believe,
is because they dont have the right kind of
support.
HENRY AND HONEY GALVEZ HAVE ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE MU EXTENSION
PROGRAM. GALVEZ QUICKLY REALIZED FARMING IN
THE US IS DIFFERENT FROM HIS NATIVE COUNTRY.
Tengo muchas cosas diferentes a cmo trabajaba
en Honduras a aqu. Y pues all, informndome con
la dems gente latina y hablando y todo. Translation: There are many things that
work differently here from in Honduras. In the
workshops, they gave me and the other Latinos information,
talked with us. everything.
THE WORKSHOPS HELPED THE GALVEZ FAMILY DECIDE THAT RAISING CATTLE WAS
NOT THE BEST OPTION FOR THEIR FARM. THEY NOW SUCCESSFULLY RAISE SHEEP
AND CHICKENS. THE FAMILY HOPES TO BE A FULL-TIME
OPERATION IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS.
These programs are more important than ever
because they give new people access to resources so they can start farming and putting into
the food crop for the country.
THE MU EXTENSION WORKSHOPS HELP LATINOS UNDERSTAND FEDERAL FARM
PROGRAMS, DECIDE WHAT FARMING PRACTICES BEST SUIT THEIR LAND, AND
NETWORK WITH OTHER FARMERS.
The University of Missouri is representing the
bridge that connects the resources in the community with the Latino farmers.
FOR THESE FARMERS, THEIR ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO SEE THEIR FARMS GROW
Thats everybodys dream out here. Thats the
United States dream. And I would like to do that.
Work for myself, not somebody else.
