Beverwijk. A city with about 40,000 inhabitants, located in the province of North Holland
A city with 2 residentials. The town Beverwijk and the village Wijk aan Zee.
The town Beverwijk has beautiful iconic churches.
The Red Cross Hospital in Beverwijk has an international reputation in curing burn injuries. It is located in the centre of town.
But most people in Holland know Beverwijk because of a big market, called "De Bazaar".
This is Europe's biggest indoor market, with over 2.000 shops and restaurants.
Every weekend, tens of thousands of people visit "De Bazaar". It is one of the most popular tourist spots in the country.
But Beverwijk has more to offer. For instance, beautiful old buildings.
This is "Huize Westerhout". It was built in the 19th century. Nowadays, a restaurant is located here.
This is the former town hall. It was built in 1909. It is now a museum.
The current town hall is located near the train station and next to a big cinema complex. It was opened in 2012.
In the western part of Beverwijk, you can find this children's zoo called "De Baak".
It is also a nature and environment education centre.
In the eastern part of Beverwijk, you can find a small zoo called "Animal Farm".
Here you can find farm animals as well as exotic animals like the rhea and the red coati.
Beverwijk has many parks, like "Park Westerhout" and "Park De Duinen", located between Beverwijk and Wijk aan Zee.
A flock of geese can be found here.
In the middle of Beverwijk, you can find the citypark "Overbos". There are many volunteers who maintain this park.
Near this park, you can find several sport accommodations.
Here you can play soccer, basketball, billiards, tennis or do athletics.
This is the shopping area in the center of town.
The bust remembers of Willem Vessies, an alderman in the 20th century.
In the 70's, Beverwijk was the first town in the Netherlands with a special furniture mall.
Lots of people come to this street to buy new furniture.
Let's take a look at the local harbour. The transhipment of wood and potatoes is the core business here.
In fact, it is the largest potatoe handling harbour in the world.
From Beverwijk we now move to Wijk aan Zee.
This meadow is characteristic for the village and therefore a protected area.
In the middle of the village, the Juliana Square is located. This is the location for many cultural events.
On top of a hill called "Paasduin", you have a beautiful view over the village.
Behind this hill, you can find an open air exhibition, called "Sea Of Steel".
This exhibition was officially opened by former Queen Beatrix in 1999.
Here, on the site of the steel factory, the sculptures were created.
This is "Heliomare", a medical rehabilitation center.
It is a major employer in the village.
But of course, most people visit Wijk aan Zee to enjoy the sea and the beach.
And afterwards, you can visit one of these nice and cozy terraces.
