In this particular grave, there was a little cluster of tiny little nails which are called
‘hobnails’ and hobnails are from Roman shoes. So they were leather shoes and they
had tiny little nails to give them a better grip on the sole. And in the soil the leather
has rotted but the little nails have survived. So this particular individual was buried with
his shoes placed next to his coffin. And we think that these shoes are put into the grave
as a way of helping him on into the afterlife, so he can travel into the afterlife with his
shoes.
