Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies
Episode 1 Turnabout Countdown
Heh heh heh heh.
A bomb destroys all. Erases all.
If I just blame everything on that girl...
December 18, 9:22 AM District Court Defendant Lobby No. 5
Phoenix: (Unh... This nervousness... Somehow, it kinda takes me back.)
Phoenix: (No matter how many times I go through this, I never get used to it...)
???: Mr. Wright!
???: What's up? You've been super quiet since we got here.
Phoenix: Huh? I-I have?
Phoenix: I-I'm just thinking about today's trial.
Phoenix: (Unh... this is bad. My mouth's been dried up since I got here.)
Phoenix: (Somehow, I feel the same as I did when I was starting out as a lawyer...)
Phoenix: My name is Phoenix Wright.
Phoenix: I'm the boss of my own law office.
Phoenix: I've been "taking a break" from practicing law recently. But now I'm back.
Phoenix: (This girl right here is Athena Cykes.)
Phoenix: (She's a new lawyer who just started working at my law office.)
Athena: I may be a newcomer, but I can pack some punches!
Athena: I like drinking orange juice after exercising and winning battles!
Phoenix: (It's good to have confidence, but sometimes striking too early can get you hurt.)
Athena: That's totally like you though, Mr. Wright. Training your image before court!
Athena: That's one of your winning strategies, huh!
Phoenix: Y-Yeah. Something like that.
Phoenix: (I can't look nervous in front of her. I'm her boss, after all.)
???: Mr. Wright, Athena... Please do your best today.
Phoenix: (This girl's name is Juniper Woods.)
Phoenix: (She's the defendant for today's trial.)
Phoenix: (And, Athena's childhood friend.)
Athena: Don't worry, Juniper!
Athena: Mr. Wright will definitely prove your innocence!
???: Mr. Wright, I'm also counting on you.
Phoenix: A-Apollo! (Shouldn't you be in the hospital...?)
Phoenix: (This guy here is Apollo Justice.)
Phoenix: (He's a junior lawyer in my office.)
Phoenix: Are you going to be okay with those injuries?
Apollo: Yeah, I'm fine! Ouch!
Phoenix: (...I'm not quite sure about that, though.)
Apollo: I couldn't just sleep, you know. I'm this case's only victim, after all.
Phoenix: (The bomb went off during Apollo's trial.)
Apollo: Originally, I wanted to be the defense for this trial...
Athena: It's no problem, Apollo!
Athena: Since it's Mr. Wright we're talking about, by the end of the trial there would be no one who doubts Juniper!
Phoenix: Eh? O-Oh! Of course!
Phoenix: (Urk... don't pressure me any further, please...)
Athena: Well! It seems that the trial is about to start.
Phoenix: Alright. Athena, are you ready? (Honestly, I'm not...)
Athena: You bet! I was born ready!
Apollo: I'll be supporting you from the jury seats. That's all I can do...
Apollo: But no matter what, you better win!
Athena: Let's do this! We're gonna win this thing!
Phoenix: Alright, then. Let's go to the courtroom.
December 18, 9:46 AM District Court Courtroom No. 5
Trial Day 1 BEGIN
Judge: Court is now in session for the trial of Ms. Juniper woods.
Phoenix: The defense is ready, Your Honor.
Payne: The prosecution is very ready, Your Honor.
Phoenix: (Urk... I feel even more nervous now that I'm standing behind the bench.)
Judge: How nostalgic... Mr. Wright.
Phoenix: Y-Yes! It's good to be back.
Judge: The time for you to stand behind the defense's bench has come again...
Judge: I'm looking forward to what the reborn Phoenix Wright can do.
Phoenix: W-Well, I did get a lot of experience the past few years.
Phoenix: (Though my mind's been going blank for a while now...)
Athena: Heh heh heh. Try not to be surprised!
Payne: Heh heh heh. You're like the Rip Van Winkle* of our generation. What can you accomplish after being away for so long?
Athena: Hey! What the-?! That was rude!
Athena: The new Phoenix Wright will knock you out in 10 minutes!
Phoenix: (You really had to go and say that... there's no way I could pull that off!)
Judge: Interesting. I would prefer a speedy trial.
Judge: This is a demo version, after all.
Judge: ...Now then, Mr. Payne. Your opening remarks, please.
Payne: The incident occurred in this very courthouse's Courtroom No. 4.
Payne: During court, according to the evidence, a time bomb had exploded.
Payne: I submit the timed bomb and the investigative report as evidence to the court.
Stuffed Animal Bomb added to the Court Record.
Investigation report added to the Court Record.
Phoenix: (I can check the evidence by clicking the Court Record button.)
Judge: The devious looking stuffed animal is the bomb?!
Payne: Heh heh. Indeed. The wires and the counter were guised inside the plushed stuff toy.
Judge: And I assume the one who triggered the switch for the bomb was the defendant... right?
Payne: Hee hee. Looks like the defendant wouldn't be declared innocent in 10 minutes, after all.
Payne: Your Honor! I have here irrefutable evidence that would prove the defendants guilt.
Judge: What's this? It looks like a burnt tail.
Payne: That's right. This happened to be a part of the ticking time bomb.
Payne: It's called the Flamephant, or something stupid of that sort.
Athena: What does that have to do with anything?!
Payne: The tail is on the other side of the stuffed animal.
Payne: Traces were found on the tail... traces of the defendants fingerprints!
Phoenix: (W-What?!)
Payne: Decisive evidence, beyond doubt!
Judge: Ahem. This is certainly irrefutable.
Judge: The court accepts this as evidence.
Stuffed Animal Tail added to the Court Record.
Payne: Heh heh heh. Times up, Mr. Wright. Your 10 minutes is over.
Payne: The verdict will definitely be guilty!
Athena: W-What do we do?!
Phoenix: W-What DO we do?!
Phoenix: You HAD to say that the trial would end in 10 minutes...
Athena: Hey! I-It's not my fault!
Judge: The defense seems to be trifled with this matter. It is no surprise.
Judge: ...Regardless, Mr. Payne. Please call your first witness to the stand.
Payne: Witness, state your name and profession.
Tonate: Name -- Tonate Shingo.
Tonate: Occupation -- Riot Squad Bomb Disposal
Judge: What is with this mechanical voice?!
Tonate: [Keyboard Input] -- [Synthesized Voice]. It is the same as my speech.
Judge: Hmm... what a troublesome witness.
Payne: He was there for the case during the explosion.
Payne: Witness! Testify to the court about the circumstances regarding the second that bomb went off.
Witness Testimony
-About the time of the explosion-
Tonate: I had shut off the bomb and brought it in for evidence.
Tonate: Name of the bomb -- HH-3000. Remote controlled or timed explosion (dual support).
Tonate: I saw it from the viewing gallery. It surprised me.
Tonate: I could see the bomb's clock ticking... it had just started to count down.
Judge: Hmm... HH-3000. So that was the bomb.
Judge: Since the bomb was guised in the stuffed animal, it wasn't visible.
Phoenix: So a switch could trigger it, even if it has been dismantled?
Tonate: Precisely. Reviving HH-3000's timer is pretty simple, really.
Tonate: Even a monkey can do it. And of course, the defendant, as well...
Judge: Well then, the defense may begin its cross examination.
Phoenix: (Cross Examination...! Right. This is where the real battle begins...)
Athena: All right! Time to unleash your true power!
Athena: The legendary "Turnabout Ace Attorney"... show them what you've got!
Phoenix: Yeah... leave it to me! (It's been a long time since I've last done this...)
Phoenix: (Eh, should I ask Athena to remind me on how to do it?) o Refresher course, please. o No need
Phoenix: (I can't ask my junior to tell me how to cross examine...)
Phoenix: (But it's alright. It's definitely all just instinct now!)
Phoenix: Alright, let's start the cross-examination!
Cross Examination
-About the time of the explosion-
Tonate: I had shut off the bomb and brought it in as evidence.
Tonate: Name of the bomb -- HH-3000. Remote controlled or timed explosion (dual support).
Tonate: I saw it from the viewing gallery. It surprised me.
Tonate: I could see the bomb's clock ticking... it had just started to count down.
Attorney's Badge My prized possession. No one would believe I was attorney without this one. (or something similar idfk)
Stuffed Animal Bomb A timed bomb which destroyed a courtroom. The bomb is guised inside the stuffed animal.
Objection!
Phoenix: So you're saying that you saw the bomb's timer count down, right?
Tonate: Yes, I saw it getting nearer and nearer to zero!
Phoenix: Mr. Tonate... I'm afraid what you're saying, is not possible!
Tonate: W-What do you mean not possible?
Phoenix: There was no way you could've seen the bomb, yet alone the timer.
Phoenix: The bomb is, after all, inside the stuffed animal.
Tonate: !
Phoenix: Witness! Tell us, then... How did you see the timer?
Phoenix: You couldn't see the clock!
Tonate: Urk...!
Athena: Good job, Mr. Wright!
Athena: You spotted a contradiction out of the blue!
Phoenix: Y-Yeah... I guess I did. (She's actually right.)
Phoenix: (Okay! I got this. I can do this!)
Judge: Well done, Mr. Wright! The "Turnabout Ace Attorney" has truly returned.
Judge: You were a legend... it's kind of nostalgic, isn't it?
Judge: You crawled your case up through the most ridiculous procedures!
Phoenix: ...That's not such a good reputation, is it?
Judge: Witness! What is the meaning of this?
Tonate: Ah, er, well... You see...
Tonate: Ah! I-I remember now!
Tonate: ...There was a sound! I knew it because of the sound.
Tonate: The bomb makes beeping noises when the timer is set.
Tonate: [Beep Beep Beep]. That was the counter's sound.
Judge: Hmm... I see. I'd say you would know that the bomb was going to go off without seeing it.
Tonate: I-I just got a little confused, Your Honor. My sincerest apologies...
Phoenix: U-Urk... (This is bad...)
Payne: Your Honor, I would like to continue by hearing the testimony from the defendant herself.
Judge: Very well. Defendant, please give your testimony.
Juniper: I... don't remember much from the explosion.
Juniper: Probably... because of the shock...
Payne: Hah! A likely story!
Athena: Mr. Wright... How about I punch that prosecutor in the face?
Phoenix: D-Don't! That would be really bad for our case!
Athena: I can hear Juniper's heart screaming.
Athena: She's afraid. She's very, very afraid...
Phoenix: (Right. It seems like she could hear it with her "special ears".)
Phoenix: (She can hear the voice of Ms. Wood's heart...)
Payne: Let us proceed with the testimony about the time of the bomb's explosion.
Witness Testimony
-When the bomb exploded-
Juniper: At that time, I was... *cough* ...in the viewing gallery. *cough* *cough*
Juniper: The bomb exploded... *cough*
Juniper: *cough* Above me... the debris was... *cough* cough*
Athena: Juniper looks like she's really in pain. It must be hard remembering for her...
Athena: She can't even say the words properly...!
Phoenix: (What do I do...? O-Oh right...!)
Phoenix: (If we can't listen to her voice, we'll have to listen to her heart...)
Phoenix: (I think's it's time to use her power!)
Phoenix: (Athena's special ability!)
Phoenix: (She can listen to the voices of people's hearts using her special ears.
Phoenix: (She can distinguish emotions from the tune of a witness' voice!)
Phoenix: (With her power... maybe we can turn this case around!)
Phoenix: Athena.
Phoenix: Listen to the testimony of Ms. Wood's heart.
Phoenix: Use the power of "psychological analysis", or whatever it is you've learned.
Athena: ...! Understood. Let's give it a shot!
Phoenix: That computer will let us see Ms. Wood's heart, right?
Athena: With my ears, I can listen to the testimony of Ms. Wood's heart.
Athena: The emotions and images I heard from her testimony...
Athena: I simply input them into this computer. It will then analyze them.
Athena: Whenever she displays emotion in her testimony, one or more of the four emotion markers will light up.
Athena: If she's having fun, the "Happy" mark will light up.
Athena: In the same manner, the "Angry" mark will light up when she's feeling frustration or anger.
Athena: The "Sad" mark indicates that the witness is, well, sad.
Athena: "Surprised" face when, as you may probably have already guessed, when the witness is in shock.
Phoenix: With your power and the computer...
Phoenix: I'll be able to know what the witness if feeling...
Phoenix: ...Right?
Athena: Yep!
Phoenix: (Alright, then! Let's listen to Ms. Wood's testimony!)
At that time, I was... *cough*
...in the viewing gallery. *cough* *cough*
The bomb exploded... *cough*
*cough*...Above me...
...the debris was... *cough* *cough*
Athena: What you just saw was Juniper's testimony and her emotions.
Phoenix: (So this is her power...)
Athena: And there was an odd emotion that didn't match her testimony!
Phoenix: Eh?! There was?!
...the debris was... *cough* *cough* Athena: Here! When the debris was falling on her, the "Happy" marker lit up! She felt happy!
...the debris was... *cough* *cough* Phoenix: Ah! That is definitely strange!
Athena: There must be a reason behind this contradiction!
Athena: When you find the strange emotion...
Athena: "Press" the witness!
Athena: Then tap on the emotion that seems out of place!
...the debris was... *cough* *cough*
Gotcha!
Phoenix: Ms. Woods!
Phoenix: When the debris falling on you... why did you feel happy?
Juniper: Eh...? *cough*
Phoenix: Take your time. Do you remember what happened?
Juniper: I... I do. It was when I was fleeing the courtroom...
Juniper: The debris was falling on me...! And I thought I was gonna die!
Juniper: Ah! Yes, that was it! But... at that time...
Juniper: Mr. Justice saved me...!
Phoenix: (Apollo's injuries were from that time...?)
Phoenix: I think she remembers now.
Athena: Hold on, I'll update the information, and...
Athena: Let's hear more of her heart's testimony!
Phoenix: I'll just "Press" on her if I find an inconsistency with her emotions!
Athena: Right! And from the selection, tap on the strange emotion!
Athena: If we can find out the reason behind her heart's discoordinance...
Athena: We can draw out a new testimony!
I was too slow... running away...
Before I could get away, the bomb exploded.
I was surprised. And in when I fell down, so did the rubble above me...
I thought it was all over for me...
But Mr. Justice came and saved me!
Gotcha!
Phoenix: When you were saved, you felt happy, right?
Juniper: Yes... I was relieved when he saved me.
Phoenix: But there was also a feeling of sadness, right?
Juniper: H-Huh?
Phoenix: Ms. Woods.
Phoenix: When you were talking about being rescued, you felt a little bit sad, right?
Juniper: ........Ah!
Juniper: That must have been because of Bum Rap Rhiny...
Phoenix: Bum Rap Rhiny? (What's she trying to say?)
Juniper: Yes. I...
Juniper: I was listening from the viewing gallery with my stuffed animal, Bum Rap Rhiny.
Juniper: Bum Rap Rhiny is Flamephant's brother.
Phoenix: (That series of stuffed animals must be really popular...)
Juniper: I was listening to the trial with Bum Rap Rhiny...
Juniper: But I realized as I was running away, I had dropped him...
Juniper: Poor Bum Rap Rhiny... he got mixed up in the explosion.
Athena: Mr. Wright! The contradictory emotions in Juniper's heart disappeared!
Athena: We've squeezed everything out from Juniper's testimony!
Juniper: Ah, that's right! Please look at this leaflet!
Please stop bumming Bum Rap Rhiny!* Juniper: Ah, that's right! Please look at this leaflet!
Juniper: This here is Bum Rap Rhiny.
Phoenix: (Ah! The design of his tails... it's...!
Phoenix: (That's it...! So this is what it is!)
Phoenix: Your Honor! The witness just gave a vital piece of testimony!
Phoenix: I assert that the existence of this "Bum Rap Rhiny" negates the prosecution's theory!
Judge: Wh-What?!
Phoenix: (This trial may not have ended in 10 minutes... however!)
Phoenix: (I still managed to take down Payne!)
Judge: Would you please point this out for us, Mr. Wright?
Judge: Show us the evidence that makes Bum Rap Rhiny's existence important!
Judge: Show us the evidence that makes Bum Rap Rhiny's existence important! Attorney's Badge My prized possesion. No one would believe I was an attorney without this.
Judge: Show us the evidence that makes Bum Rap Rhiny's existence important! Stuffed Animal Tail A part of the animal with the bomb inside. Covered with the defendant's fingerprints.
Take That!
Phoenix: Ms. Woods... I know it's hard, but hang in there.
Phoenix: It's alright. After all, you're innocent.
Judge: Defense! What is the meaning of this?!
Phoenix: The two stuffed animals... they were confused.
Phoenix: The tail with the defendant's fingerprints were Bum Rap Rhiny's.
Phoenix: It didn't belong to Flamephant, where the bomb was placed in!
Payne: Nyaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Athena: You did it! Amazing! It was THE turnabout!
Phoenix: ...Athena. Calm down. The trial still isn't over.
Athena: Ah! R-Right. But we definitely won't be losing!
Athena: We're gonna have to make everyone who's doubting Juniper turn around!
Phoenix: Yeah. Together, we will prove Ms. Wood's innocence!
Phoenix: (...in the full version of this game!)
Stay tuned!
