Attorneys in a lawsuit against the Whirlpool company help local families
find some answers tonight.
Nearly two weeks after families in Clyde and in Green Springs filed a
class-action suit against
Whirlpool.13 ABC's Amy Montgomery spoke to families about the cancer cluster
investigation.
Nobody needs to tolerate this! This is totally unacceptable!
...he died in March of 2012. Dozens of families from Clyde and
Green Springs made the trip to Fremont to learn more about what could be making
people sick
in Sandusky County. There's no magic answers now
We've just started the investigation and our goal is to
give these people some answers. Nearly two weeks ago twenty
seven people filed a lawsuit against the Whirlpool Corporation for wrongful death
and property damage.
Monday, people in those communities yearning for answers
came out to learn more. I think there's definitely a connection to something but
I don't know that we'll ever find out for sure what.
The lawsuit alleges benzaldehyde, a suspected carcinogen used by Whirlpool
was found in the attics of homes where kids died.
Warren Brown's home was one of them. His daughter Alexa died
after a battle with brain cancer. When I laid down in a bed
next to my daughter within weeks of her passing away
and I made a promise that I would never let this go. Other families are in the
same fight
like Penny (name) both her granddaughters are sick
one with Crohn's, the other was several immune deficiencies.
We've all been little worried and after learning about the chemicals that could
be in her home she wants it checked
and like everyone else she wants accountability.
If this is something that they might have caused years back
they should step up to the plate and do right by the community.
ABC reached out to Whirlpool for a statement on the lawsuit and the company
tells us the accusations are false
and it will defend itself. The statement goes on to say that Whirlpool has been a
part of the community for six decades
and will remain committed to acting responsibly. Now another big question tonight
was
how people can clean up their attics if that chemical was found there
and the attorney said the only way is with the complete hazmat team
similar to asbestos or black mold removal.
