hi I'm Jim Wiseman, a math professor here at Agnes Scott
you may have received mail from Agnes Scott stating that the chances of snow
in Atlanta were slim
Since it was six degrees here yesterday, the coldest it's been since
1996,
we've got a few questions about that. I teach probability
and I can tell you we stand by our statement. think about it this way, if
a meteorologist says there's a 60 percent chance of rain
but it doesn't rain does that mean that she was wrong
no there's luck involved now if that happens frequently
you might start to think that there's something wrong with her claims and
that's something that we talk about in our probability and statistics classes
and sometimes
in philosophy classes too. But in this case we feel pretty good about our statement
that is not likely to be snowing in Atlanta
even if it were snowing right now which it isn't
the chances that it will be snowing when you watch this
or read our mail would be pretty slim especially since it's supposed to be 64
degrees on Saturday
we hope you'll take a chance and come visit for yourself
