In these two problems we going to be working with
single unit, multiple unit conversions.
So a single unit is something like 26 inches.
That would be a single unit
A multiple unit would be feet and inches.
So let's see how this is going to work. We have 26 inches so what I'd like
to do
is to write 26 inches in terms of
some values that we know that are
feet values. So let me write that as
12 inches plus
12 inches, so that would be 24 inches
plus 2 inches, that would still give me 26 inches.
But the reason I chose 12 inches is because 12 inches is
1 foot plus 1 foot,
there's another 12 inches plus 2 inches,
therefore what I have is
2 feet 2 inches.
So the single-unit
26 inches is equivalent to
the multiple units 2 feet, 2 inches.
Another example,
write 5 pounds, 6 ounces in ounces. So here we have
in multiple-unit, and we want to change that to
a single unit. I'm going to remember
that I have a relationship between pounds and ounces,
so 1-pound is 16 ounces,
so 5 pounds then
would be 5 times 16 ounces, so let's try it this way.
So 5 pounds, 6 ounces,
would equal 5 times
16 ounces,
plus 6 ounces.
So 5 times 16 is 80 ounces,
plus 6 ounces, giving
us 86 ounces.
So the double units, 5 pounds 6 ounces
are equivalent to the single units 86 ounces.
