Chile volcano ash forces flights to be cancelled again. Hundreds of flights out of Argentina
and Uruguay had to be cancelled on Thursday, June 9, due to ash clouds from Chile’s erupting
Puyehue volcano over South America. Winds had fanned the ash as far east as southern
Brazil. With most flights traveling at an average height of 10,000 meters, ash was being
detected as high as 9,000 meters above the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. All flights
from Buenos Aires were thus grounded, as well as most out of the Uruguayan capital Montevideo,
causing Uruguayan President José Mujica to postpone a meeting in Buenos Aires with his
Argentine counterpart, Cristina Fernández. The first annual meeting of finance ministers
from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) regional bloc was also postponed. Meanwhile,
crews in the Argentine resort town of Villa La Angostura, 40 kilometers from the volcano,
worked to clear more than 20 centimeters of volcanic ash that brought down power lines
and clogged water pipes.
Our appreciation, officials, for your safety precautions. We pray that such dangers may
soon be lifted as humanity’s kinder ways help stabilize
the ecosphere
