Hi. My name is Amy Hlavacek and I teach math here at SVSU.
I’m also one of the directors of the Math and Physics Resource Center, which is a tutoring
center here on campus. I have never thought of myself as a writer.
Obviously as a math major, math and sciences were my stronger subjects, and I was actually
afraid of writing. Writing was my low AP score.
I didn’t have any confidence in writing, and I hate to admit it, but I took the minimum
number of writing classes in college. What I found as I progressed through college
and then graduate school, and then being a faculty member,
is that writing something that I understood, and that was close to me, and that I was passionate
about, helped me develop my confidence as a writer.
So when I was writing about math–or something as simple as writing a recommendation letter
for a student, you know, a student that you’ve gotten to
know well—is a very rewarding and fun project.
