This is Steven Wimer with Wimervision and today I'm going to show you how to improve
the video recording quality of your Motorola Droid at the expense of extra disk space.
There are many ways to do this but this one will not require the use of a computer and
can be done completely on the Droid. There are a few things you will need first in order
to get this boost in video recording quality.
-You will need a rooted Droid with Busybox installed
-You will need a File Management program, I recommend Astro File Manager which you can
find for free in the Android Market -You will need a Terminal Emulator, I recommend
Android Terminal Emulator which can be found for free in the Android Market
-Optionally there is a program called Droidrootpro ($2.49 in market) that makes mounting and
other tasks easier
First we will need to create a backup of the file we are going to modify so we can restore
the original in case something goes wrong. I'd also recommend a current Nandroid backup
if you have Nandroid installed. It can save your Droid if you make a mistake or do something
risky. Open your terminal emulator program, give yourself superuser permissions by typing
'su' and pressing enter on the hard keyboard. We need to remount the filesystem so we can
make changes, we do that by typing: mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4
/system You can use DroidRootPro to mount the filesystem
if you like, I would use it if you have it. Next we will type, busybox cp /system/build.prop
/system/build.prop.bak Now we will move a copy to the SDcard and
we will work with it. Type busybox cp /system/build.prop /sdcard/build.prop
and press enter We can now hit the home button to switch back
to our home screen since we are done with the terminal for now. Next we will open our
Astro File Management program. We will the home button inside Astro, not the home button
on the bottom of the Droid, and then long press on the build file listed in the window.
We will select Open As, then press text, then file editor.
It will load up our file which contains lots of things we don't want to be playing around
with if you don't know what you're doing. We will scroll down until we get to the line
that says: ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=3000000. We want to change this to say ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=8000000.
While in here, you can also change the vid.fps which is the next line up to 30 if you wish.
If you do that, you may need to also change the codec.vid to m4v as h264 may overtax the
cpu onboard the droid and drop some frames. Once you've made all the changes you wanted
to, press the menu button and press close. It will give you an option to save the file
and we will do that otherwise there would be no point.
Now we will long press the home button and press the terminal program we used earlier.
If for some reason it isn't listed, just start it again manually. We should still have superuser
permissions. If not you'll need to type su and press enter again. Now we will copy our
new file over to the /system folder by typing: busybox cp /sdcard/build.prop /system/build.prop
and press enter. The changes will not take effect until the phone has been rebooted.
You can type reboot here and press enter to do that. Once your phone is rebooted, load
up your camera application and record some higher quality video! Thank you for watching
this video and I hope it helps.
