As a group of Appleton, Wisconsin high school students and mentors, NEW Apple Corps FIRST
Robotics Team 93 has built 17 robots since 1996 but we're more than just a robot. Our
team consists of students from various backgrounds that have been influenced by technology in
diverse and substantial ways.
I'm Luke Moss. I do a lot with Media on Team 93 and, even though I'm only a freshman,I
feel like I can solve any problem the world throws at me. I've attended private, public,
charter, and home school, and consequently I believe that technology integrated into
education offers the optimum learning experience. It's what makes me tick, and its impossible
for me to see myself without it because it's changed my life so overwhelmingly. Last year
I attended Kaleidoscope Academy. Technology was embedded into everything we did; We used
it in every class, in every project. We turned in everything online. We used technology even
more than pencils and paper. With that technology I learned to better manage time, problem solve,
be creative, improvise, pretty much succeed in any environment, overcome challenges, and
have fun in the process. It made me live what I was learning.
Hi, My name is Isaac Slayton and I am the only homeschooler on FRC Team 93. Because
I am a homeschooler, many things are different as far as my education, but I still use technology
in many unique ways. I watch most of my school lessons on DVD via my laptop, which I also
use for typing out everything from writing assignments to answers to questions on my
chapter reviews. I am currently using it to take the Appleton eSchool class web design,
which is not offered at any other school in the district. Using what I have learned so
far in programming knowledge, I recently undertook the role of webmaster for Team 93, and make
improvements to the website on a daily basis, expounding upon my programming knowledge.
If it hadn't been for these resources, I would not be pursuing web design as my career choice.
Hey, I'm Moira Carlson. FIRST has really opened my eyes to the possibilities of an engineering
profession, within my second year of robotics participation. As a student in the Tesla Engineering
Charter School, I have developed technical skills that I could not have learned anywhere
else. Skills such as machining; Autocad, drafting, technical writing and communication, plus
how to work well with others to solve a problem. I believe my time spent learning with mentors
and staff has greatly impacted my life and future. I look forward to an academic career
in Mechanical Engineering, with a minor in Drafting.
I'm Nick Wiesman. In class at East we use smartboards, online videos, and computers
while students collaborate with texts, emails, and video chat during projects. The school
district pays for online resources such as databases and libraries but you can also do
all kinds of multimedia activities in and out of school. I'm part of Appleton East TV,
which broadcasts morning announcements but also live-streams and records important school
events. FIRST Robotics Team 93 allows me to expand my knowledge of video production and
other aspects of media. My Freshman year on the team I was the only individual working
on media projects but now that other members have joined, I get the experience of working
with technology in a functional environment. I am more confident in my life and know that
I want to pursue Film Production as a career. It's incredible.
