Big ideas for Birmingham, a viral fundraiser turns messy, and a prescription for change:
Welcome to the UAB Minute. UAB faculty, staff, and students played a major role in the 2014
TEDx Birmingham conference on March 1. The event, co-organized by UAB space archaeologist
Sarah Parcak, was designed to spark conversation and action around big ideas, from arts education
to cybercrime. See all the presentations at this link. UAB dental student AJ Fennell's
picture of a snow-covered Birmingham went viral in mid-February. So he put the attention
to good use, starting an online fundraising campaign for UAB endodontics resident Ned
Wikle, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. It was just part of a week of
fundraising activities for Wikle, including a pie-throwing contest. More than $40,000
has been raised so far. Michael Saag has been a leader in the fight against AIDS for 30
years, his efforts have helped turn AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable chronic
disease. In his new book, "Positive," Saag recounts the personal stories from those years
of struggle, he also explains how the spirit of cooperation that spurred AIDS discoveries
could transform the dysfunctional U.S. healthcare system. Learn more about each story at www.uab.edu/reporter.
