The Butterfly Garden at Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando Florida is located adjacent to
the cottage in the center of the garden. More than one hundred different plants are incorporated
into the design. That design then attracts butterflies all twelve months of the year.
There are two type of plants used in the Butterfly Garden; nectar and larval plants. Nectar plants
are usually attention getting with bright colored flowers and also tend to be fragrant.
The nectar plants are the butterfly’s food source. Larval plants are those plants that
the butterflies will lay their eggs on. Nature has provided well. Once the eggs hatch the
young caterpillars begin to eat the leaves of the plants. That explains why most of the
larval plants look a bit unkempt. It's not faulty gardens it's because of Mother Nature’s
