A neighbourhood champion is somebody who is interested in their community,
interested in what's going on in their street,
and wants to get involved.
Because if we've got somebody watching out for what's going on in every street,
we'll be in a very, very, good position
not only to clear up the environmental issues
but also to give the police an immense amount of intelligence
of things that may be going on, that we know shouldn't be going on.
My name is Alexander MacDonald.
I've lived here for 37 years in Harrow and I'm a retired Police Officer.
I like public jobs.
and so I like to get involved with the public.
And therefore, the Neighbour Championship is another challenge for me.
And I like it!
This is about encouraging people to be volunteers.
To actually get out on the streets, just occasionally,
have a little look at what's going on, if they see something that they don't like,
then they've got a hot system to report it. Either via on the web or via telephone.
My Name is Kalpna Patel,
and I live at St Andrews Drive.
I've been here for nearly 6-7 years and I'm a housewife.
What we try to do is prevent burglary.
We tell each other neighbours to keep an eye on each others house.
If you are away for the evening or even away for the weekend.
And we try to support one another.
†
And we always give out handy phone numbers
friends phone numbers or other phone numbers,
if you're not there, then who to get in touch with.
So we try to work that as a community.
My name's Sylvia Farooqi,
I've been a resident of Harrow for 22 years now.
I'm just always just very curious to have more control of the area with any underlying issues.
It could be problems to do with the transport, the roads,
Anything, can be covered under the
champion queries.
Anti-social behaviour, noise, lights not working...anything really.
Each unique individual will be trained and we will be ensuring
that you have the right information at your fingertips.
Ultimately, your safety is paramount.
And as Councillor Hall says, you are not vigilantes. You are volunteers.
So you never put yourself in a risky situation.
We would ask you to make sure that you phone 999
but we also have some non-emergency numbers.
For the moment this is unique, but I've already had phone calls from other borough Commanders,
who want to visit Harrow and look at the work that we're doing.
So this is an exciting project.
It's unique at the moment. But I expect it to be rolled out in lots of other boroughs,
when they see the importance of working so closely with the Local Authority and the Police.
I would love one on every street,
and that is what we are aiming for. 2068 Neighbourhood Champions.
Already, we've got 300 people signed up.
200 People signed up for training, already.
And they're coming in thick and fast everyday,
so we're very, very pleased with the reaction we've had so far.
