Armin W. Troesch: It's a very great pleasure to be here today. One of the great benefits
of being on the faculty, and I've been here for over 35 years, is that we get a chance
to work with the brightest. The best young talent, that you see come through the university,
and Michigan certainly does attract the brightest and the best. Dae Hyun is characteristic of
this. Dae Hyun Kim: Before I came to Michigan, I
worked for a company. I worked in an industry setting, and I had a chance to read a couple
of papers. Whenever I see those papers, I felt something, something inside me. I wanted
to write something like this. The reason I chose Michigan is, really, Michigan is the
best when it comes to Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. There are not many schools
that have Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering here in the United States, not to mention
in the entire world, but Michigan is really the best.
One thing I found very surprising was I heard about it, but it's the relations between advisors
and students. It's like friends. It's a relatively small department, so everybody
knows pretty much everybody. Whenever I need something, I can go [inaudible] and ask directly.
Pretty much every day I can get what I want in order to expedite my research or my learning.
I spent a fair number of years of my life on the dissertation, and I did my best. Getting
some recognition and this is a really great recognition, means a lot to me.
When you mention this interview I thought about it, and what kind of question would
I ask. One thing I thought about is what I've gotten from Michigan, or the experience, the
years I lived in Michigan. Lots of things, I gained a couple of pounds, and I've got
a collection of books and lots of papers, but this little fellow [laughs] is three month
old. He was one reason I was able to finish my dissertation.
