§ [whinnies]
§ (male speaker) I'm representing J for jockey.
Jockeys have the responsibility of trying to do to the best of ability
what the trainer wants them to do. The trainer deals 24/7, 365 days with the
horse. Each horse is assigned a certain weight,
and depending on how much I weigh and the horse's assigned weight,
between my saddle and the rest of my equipment, I have to get on the scale and weigh 158 pounds.
In South Carolina, Aiken also has a steeplechase. Here in Camden, they also have a flat race
that'll be conducted at the end of the day. (race caller #1) Resigned is second, and that's
how it's gonna be. (race caller #2) Last bench coming up...
(jockey) The Carolina Cup and Colonial Cup are known throughout this country and probably
the world. Over the years, it's brought absolute world
renown. They've had Irish, English, and Australian
horses compete. (race caller) Here they come down to the wire!
Good Night Shirt on the inside with Preemptive Strike very close.
I'm wearing silks, and they represent the owner's colors.
The owners design these themselves, register them with The Jockey Club,
and as long as nobody has the same design, they get to keep those.
Inside of our silks is basically what's called a safety vest
to protect us in case we fall from the impression of the ground
or, if we get stepped on or kicked, to protect our insides.
We do our job, get cleaned up, and go home, and hopefully we're walking safe and sound.
