Moving on...so we are going to search something from the YLE archieve that influenced the album Stones Grow Her Name
and also influenced overall to Sonata Arctica's music.
Let's see something from LP section, number 62997...
Here
What did you say..997, right?
Found something familiar here.
And what is it?
Queen: A Kind Of Magic
The first cassette/music record that I had was the live version of this particular album
Bought it for my own money. It's been really big part of my musical growing,
Queen overall has been. You really can hear the influence in Sonata's music.
At least when you have listened a lot Queen you seem to hear it there.
Let's move on. At the CD section 3536
Aerosmith. Awesome!
Surprise, surprise!
Haha what did we choose here..??
Aerosmith: Permanent Vacation. It's a great album. I have actually bought this recently,
the songs have been important to me for a long time but now I finally bought the CD version of it..
it was 5 years ago
Very new buy for you.
haha yea..new buy.
What good albums came out this year??
That band is the kind of that did not influence that much at least in my own music if I compare it to Queen.
With Queen it's a lot more but this band is more forgotten.
I like how they have a good drive and feeling.
The dvd "making of pump" is a good one.
There is nothing amazing in it, just shown how they work.
I was actually laughing when I saw how Steven Tyler works; sitting behind his keyboard and saying
'let's play like this...diu-diu-diu..' and like that. It looks very similar as how Tony works at our rehearsing place.
I was also laughing at it myself.
I laughed my *** off while watching it...
had to rewind and see it again.. Is there really more of these guys??
Where do they grow these??
If we start talking about the influences you have, more unusual ones..
this next one has brought something new for Sonata Arctica's music.
Found it? Found the unusual one...
J. Karjalainen ja Lännen-Jukka. This is the album that inspired me to listen to music again...and actually inspired me to write music again.
The longest writing got a spark again once I "chopped things to pieces" again. Cleaning the foundations and starting things again...
...took only the banjo and man there. I fell in love with this album. This is one of the few albums that I have bought more than once.
Okay.
As a present, too.
You gave one for me also..if I remember correctly. That really is something you got a good feeling..
and also it's the kind if you listen a lot music you get easily tired with it and also when your work is about music
you really can feel like not listening anything. Then you rather listen something really different like that.
It also brings something new to yourself then. It is really awesome album.
Bluegrass music has always been close to my heart, it makes me smile.
After this I moved on to listen Ray Charles and all that kind of "paths" of music that I had never walked before. This opened gates for me.
It really did confuse a bit when Tony had found a banjo sound in his synthesizer and had made a song with it. First times when we listened it we were pretty silent.
First times you were silent but later started to laugh a bit.
Yea, right.
Then all of sudden it was a good song.
And moving on again..42 000 ... at the CD section.. just a second...we passed it already..
yes right there behind your backs. 42 607.. it's here.
Oh, there!
42 607..here... zero seven..where is it.. here is..
One row up.
Yes, ofcourse..yes I know what record is it. I want to find it myself..is it this?
Yes!
This must be the reason why the band started to play heavy. Right?
Pretty much like that, yes. First we started to imitate and...
and when that wasn't success we had to start something else.
then had to start doing something own.
These guys have done a big job and show the way for everyone else, for us younger. For us younger old.
They have banged heads to the wall to make a hole there.
. I can really say we were not here to search these albums if that band did not exsist...or how can we know...making some reaggee albums.
Doing something really different..
Then a band that mixes tender feelings and also knows how to rock in this album really well. 15 520.
Four, six..what do we have here.. 80 and .... 509... now here it seems to be.
What is it?
Metallica's Black album..that has a white.. it's confusing.
It's the first Metallica that I heard and I said to some friend that it's really good.
He said it's not good, it's commercial ***, you should listen Master of puppets. So I did, but still not agreed completely with him,
but yes it was bit better in my opinion also..was like.. 'can you play like this?', it's so awesome.
That is really too easy to like.
Yes, it sounds too good, it has too good songs in it, otherwise it's pretty ok album.
I believe this did not influence much on Tony's songwriting. Elias instead.. our guitarist.. in this album you really can hear the guitars..
When he was young, he have been playing Metallica a lot, you can not take that influence off him.
At least I can hear some Metallica in his playing, particularly Hetfield, not Hammett. That is why we have chosen this.
Moving on..going back again. CD section 9598.
Numbers look strange..
Here is two of these same albums
Take one with you
This kind of thing.
Yes, this is a hard rock album that no one of us could not avoid.
Our mixing guy Ahti - who we worked a long time with - did play in every sound check 'Kickstart My Heart'.. and our new album is more about rock, not that multilayer thing.
Let's say that the extremity have been left out...it's more like we have this one same extremity staying
.. a bit some more heavy stuff ..different kind of heavy stuff and the lighter side is somewhere there..
but overall it's more rock. In my opinion it still sounds like Sonata.
The funniest thing is that we should ourself say what did we do but you just can't say it.
It sounds good..
Listen it yourself and then you may call it whatever you want.
If you like it,send e-mail to me. If you did not, send e-mail to Henkka.
That's the deal we made. .. I can take it, no problem. Will put your name in the newspaper with a picture..so don't be too mean.
