SCENES FROM THE FILM "CIDADE CINZA"
DIRECTED BY MARCELO MESQUITA AND GUILHERME VALIENGO
The day that that post busted the net,
there were about 300 messages saying: "Man, perfect,
keep fighting, don't give up!"
I was amazed.
WHO MAKES CROWDFUNDING IN BRAZIL?
Crowdfunding? What are you doing with the money?
There are movies going to the Oscar's made possible through Kickstarter.
Spike Lee movie... Million budget...
Crowdfunding is an English name, we call it collective funding in Brazil.
Crowdfunding is on demand content.
You support things you think are important.
Whether it's an album with a cultural impact,
an educational or an innovation project.
That person giving ten, thirty, fifty Reals
is raising his hand and saying "I liked it".
You only make the project if you get all the money,
otherwise, the money will go back to the person.
I think it's right, fair and safe.
It started with no money, then we got the law approved.
The movie was on the can, we took part in some festivals,
but we had no money to distribute.
I introduced crowdfunding to my family during a Sunday lunch,
and my 90yo grandpa said: "young man, are you raffling your movie?"
Then it came to me... It's a raffle.
We'll release the album in CD and vinyl.
We've decided to presale it
so people could interact the same way with that kind of exclusive information.
Since it was really accessible through the internet,
we thought it would be a promotional strategy.

Be part of this moment with us...
A really healthy information exchange relation.
People started to go to our concerts. Even those who weren't from Sao Paulo
were asking about it.
From site to site, people are able to grow
and to get to other people's channels.
KICKSTARTER IS NOW THE BIGGEST CROWDFUNDING PLATFORM IN THE WORLD
CATARSE IS THE MOST KNOWN CROWDFUNDING SITE IN BRAZIL
Four days before finishing crowdfunding,
there were 60 per cent of the budged...
I made a desperate post called "I'm raffling my film".
And things went nuts.
Ronaldo, the soccer player, and others twittered "help the movie" on Catarse.
He's a fan of Gemeos and because we started talking
with the urban intervention artists, with NGOs.
With the extra money we got from Crowdfunding
we started another project
of taking "Cidade Cinza" to places where there is no theater.
We're giving back all the effort
made by more than 500 contributors.
It's not easy. It takes a lot of work.
We must be patient to explain, to talk on the phone...
The second half of the project will be decisive...
A great expectation.
I looked and said: "Jesus! What's happening?
I have 200 new friends!" And I'm not even...
connected with social network, but...
