Hi, I'm Joanna Brockhurst and I'm an Environmental Assistant for Sita waste management company.
I did an honours degree in Environmental Science, and I graduated in 2011 with a 2:1 honours.
My job is to monitor old used landfill sites, open landfill sites and a variety of civic
amenities, material recycling facilities and such like.
I cover the whole of the south east of England and with my findings I report back to the
Environment Agency. Many of the modules that I undertook during
my time at Kingston has come in very useful in my everyday job, for example we took a
field trip out to Almeria and we learned about the importance of field note taking; I use
all these skills every day and I apply them and it gave me vital skills to be able to
do my job. A variety of modules covered environmental
pollution, both looking at the air and the water and the ground, which again applies
to my everyday job. Having the ability to understand water quality,
water pollution and the chemical analysis of it is critical for my monthly report to
the Environment Agency which are legal documents and are vital understanding of what is going
on within landfills and as to whether the engineering is working or if there is any
fault and if everything is working as it should. I also apply a lot of my ecosystems modules,
which I have covered in the conservation aspects, by observations that I make when on site;
I look at fauna that's around and I check for dieback which may be as a result for anything
going wrong within a landfill. This could be the presence of dead animals,
it could be dying back flowers or it could be the opposite in which is everything blooming
really well which shows that everything exists as it should, and it is thanks to Kingston
University and doing my degree that gave me these skills. So, knowledge!
