Leadership is not a title, it’s an action. Leadership is the art of influencing people
in order to achieve a result. All Public Information Officers are leaders
in one aspect or another. Communicating and influencing others, whether it be with the
public, firefighters, communities, media or other agencies, is the key to successful and
effective leadership. Fire leadership is for more than just the
wildland firefighter. It’s for everyone in the wildland fire service. Public Information
Officers are a critical link in developing leadership throughout the wildland fire service.
However, before you can develop others, you must continually develop self. This video
will help provide you different avenues to expand your leadership knowledge and expertise.
The mission of the Wildland Fire Leadership Development Program is to promote cultural
change in the work force and to emphasize the vital importance of leadership concepts
in the wildland fire service by providing educational and leadership development opportunities.
Leading in the Wildland Fire Service is a book that expresses the fundamental leadership
concepts of the wildland fire service. It outlines the framework, values and principles
that guide wildland fire leaders in providing leadership across a broad range of missions.
The concepts of this book are universal to every person in the wildland fire service.
This book provides a common communication platform for fire leadership. It’s how we
speak with one voice. You, as PIOs, are that voice.
This book is structured around our leadership values and principles as a way of communicating
what right looks like and illustrating effective leadership in action.
Our values and principles include: Duty: Accomplishing the Mission.
Respect: Taking Care of People. Integrity: Developing Yourself.
Leading in the Wildland Fire Service is available on the Wildland Fire Leadership Development
Program website. It is important to understand the levels of
leadership. These levels will help you understand where you’re at and what you can pursue
to increase your leadership skills and abilities. As our careers progress, some move from being
a leader of people to being a leader of leaders to being a leader of an organization. At each
level, we rise to meet the challenges of adhering to our values of duty, respect and integrity
and assume the responsibility of instilling those values in others.
The Wildland Fire Leadership Development Program offers a variety of ways to educate yourself
about fire leadership. Incorporating leadership will make you a better person in all aspects
of your life. The Wildland Fire Leadership Development Program
website offers a variety of courses, tools, and information regarding fire leadership.
