Slipping into your surroundings and the street is the most important thing.
Think of it like this: If someone decides to take a third look at you, it's to kill you.
It's important to investigate on your own feet, and see it with your own eyes.
A video camera and cell phone are essential.
The key is how well you can film without getting caught.
If you're a good observer, you're able to learn more.
People's gazes are important, too. You can sometimes tell what they'll do next from their gaze.
You're a top-rate detective if you can predict how things are going to unfold.
Makoto Ohara. Private detective.
Today is an infidelity investigation. We'll be following a husband as he leaves work.
The bulk of a private detective's work is infidelity investigations.
Corporate background checks, infidelity investigations, and missing person investigations are the majority.
Today, we'll be using three to five other detectives.
We'll gather and have a little strategy meeting beforehand.
There's nothing more important than personal information.
Address, place of work, photograph.
In order to identify a target, we look at a photo and memorize individual features.
For example, someone's eyes or nose might look like a sibling's or a celebrity's.
You use things like that to remember better.
A large company building will have multiple entrances and exits.
So we case the location a week before, at the same time as the investigation.
Doing this lets us understand the flow of people and traffic in the area.
Everyone has a camera to ensure they can take video proof.
Cell phones are also essential.
You need to capture key moments for evidence. Entering an exiting a hotel, for example.
Be absolutely sure you can get those.
I'm often asked what the best distance is for following a target.
I tell people it's anywhere from 0 to 100 meters.
In a full train, you could get stuck 2 meters away and not know where your target is going.
In that case, it's better to be right behind them. So, 0 meters.
Other times, 100 meters is better. Imagine a straight road with no side streets.
In that case, you need to be far enough that they can't see your face if they turn around.
We're not necessarily going to catch them red-handed on the first day.
A lot of times, nothing happens.
Oh dear. His wife just texted me.
"My husband texted me saying he'll have a few drinks then come home."
"So no need to follow him tonight."
That's it for me today then.
My office has always been here in Shinjuku, near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building.
I carefully watch the videos we take and turn them into a report.
Reports are the primary product sold by private detectives and investigators.
We have them kissing here on the street, near a crossing.
To us, these kinds of shots are the best evidence.
Look, they're even kissing on the train.
Detectives could be watching your every move.
I'm going to do a *** test.
We'll be inspecting this undergarment we were sent.
Like this.
See how it turned blue? That means there's *** there.
In this case, the man could have had sex with a woman and wiped himself with this undershirt.
We can treat this as a rough indication that an affair has taken place.
Half of the reason I became a private detective was because I enjoyed peeping.
Not in the criminal sense, though.
I wanted to "peep" into a girlfriend's life to see if she really was who she said she was.
That's part of what got me started.
Crazy jobs? I could come up with dozens.
A good one involves my finger here. It got sliced open.
It was cut open in a V-shape.
We learned that someone's cheating husband was renting a new apartment with his mistress.
So his wife and I staked out the apartment.
The husband strolled into the apartment, holding hands with a young woman.
At that moment, the wife brought out a kitchen knife she was hiding in her handbag,
and tried to stab the young woman.
I tried to stop her but she struggled, and ended up cutting my hand.
Being out on the street is so important for detective work. It keeps my mind sharp.
That's why I'm always out on jobs. I love being out there, investigating on my own two feet.
I also like drinking after work.
This is where I come for peace of mind.
Drinking and having a good laugh with women helps keep me energetic.
There's nothing that makes me happier.
I'm always thinking when I drink...
About strategies for tomorrow.
Detectives are those who seek the truth.
