>> At UC Irvine, we embrace academic excellence, research excellence and leadership excellence.
These are important ingredients to our goal to developing the entire person. And this
is why our fourth pillar of excellence is character excellence. Our values are our foundation
of this pillar. I am always proud to see our students recognized in the broader community
for their character excellence. Last spring, for example, out all of the senior baseball
players in Division I, UC Irvine pitcher Daniel Bibona was recognized as the outstanding scholar
athlete. For a combination of his athletic ability, academic excellence, community service
and character. And like so many of our students, Daniel volunteers his time in the community.
A growing number of students are participating in the Global Brigades program traveling to
needy towns in Honduras three times a year to help build latrines and water storage units
to improve public health. On our own campus, students are embracing the lessons of the
Dalai Lama to promote kindness and peace. Of course, we always have room for improvement;
and I am chairing an Advisory Council on Campus Climate, Culture & Inclusion to strengthen
our climate of mutual respect and appreciation. We've already started receiving feedback from
the campus community, and I hope you will contact me with your thoughts and ideas as
we move forward. I am proud to be a part of the UC Irvine family. I look forward to what
the year ahead will bring as we live our values, embrace our four pillars of excellence, and
shape the future.
