It's a new day-- we arrive at a beautiful,

Hey, everyone! Welcome to the stylish new
Icis Apartment homes here in Glendale, California.
Now, so far in this competition, you've really only been designing for yourselves.
But, of course, on HGTV, most of our shows
involve working with clients.
So that is what you'll be doing this week.
Really?
I've never done any apartment rental work for a client before,
but I'm never nervous doing something
that I've never done before, because that's all I do.
You'll be splitting into teams of two.
Each pair will make over the main room in one of four separate apartments.
All of the apartments have the same basic floor plan,
and they all have the same client.
Ahh.
We found a young couple that just cannot decide how to design their new place.
So the winner of this challenge will design the apartment that they want to move into most.
You'll have two days to complete your spaces.
We're also gonna give each apartment help from a painter.
Oh, good, thank you!
(David) I know--you're welcome.
Now, to find out who your partner is...

I want to live on a vineyard some day.

Shabby chic, to me, I think girly...don't wanna go girly.

What would be your favorite music?
I'm a singer-songwriter-- I play guitar, country music.
Okay, I was catching the country vibe when I first met y'all.
Anne and Jeribai really asked good questions, I thought,

I've worked in smaller homes, I've worked in rentals...
there's things you can do in your own home that you can't do in a rental,

Natural woods--rustic, natural woods, yep.
So what would play well with that?

Oh, great, look-- it overlooks the pool.
So the TV would be over here...
'Cause right, isn't that a better view this way?
That is a better view.
I am primarily residential design.

For bold graphics, I was kinda thinking
of something more... geometrical.
We learned that he's vintage and leather, and he rides a motorcycle,

There's a lot to look at... I'm trying to figure out where to go first.
There's definitely a global feel in the accessorizing that's coming from everywhere,
but the room as a whole feels so overly traditional.
I actually love what's happening on this entire wall.
I think that they used books beautifully.
That's a dummy curtain-- do you see
how the burgundy is short, it doesn't even go across the whole wall?
I wonder what happened there.
And the trying to mimic the crown molding...
(David) That was Boris's camera challenge tip.
It was a tip from about 10 years ago on a very tiny budget,
and it works only when you have walls that don't have texture.
All right, this is the apartment done by Jeribai and Anne.
I think Kacey and Rossi are really gonna like the warmth of the space.
I pulled as much together as I possibly could at the end of this challenge.
We've had a really good design intent...
but this is an incomplete space.
When you look at these pieces individually, you can tell,
this is somebody who has chosen this with a high level of taste.
I do love looking at every single piece in this space,
and I love the classic lines, I think they're all fantastic.
These are good stripes-- did they paint those, or the painters painted those?
Jeribai painted those, spent hours.
Okay, our graphic man.
(Vern) What's missing, for me, is some curtains.
Window treatments across that whole wall
would've changed the feel of this entire room.
Is that, like, barbed wire on the wall?
(David) It is.
(Genevieve) I actually do like it.
All right, so that is the apartment done by Anne and Jeribai.
Great.
All right, so this is the apartment done by Cris and Tylor.
(Genevieve) Whoa.
I think the space says earth and pastel
because of the green,
and I would totally hang out in this apartment.
There are aspects to this space that I think are really successful.
I love the piece of furniture up against this wall-- it's functional.
I love the area rug-- I feel like there's
so much luxury on that side of the space,
and then...it sort of falls through the cracks.
Love is the music of the soul... did someone make that?
(David) That was done by Cris.
(Vern) It doesn't feel polished, it doesn't seem like the best move.
That is a bad color.
Pistachio is a fantastic color to accessorize with,
not to base an entire room around.
This room was done by Tiffany and Brooks.
(Sabrina) Wow!
I tried to divvy it up so there wouldn't be too much of a contrast
between Rossi's things and Kacey's things.
This whole space, to me, is very inviting.
I love the fact that this television isn't centered
so that you can watch that without twisting your neck.
I think the furniture selections are really nice and very sophisticated.
You see stripes on walls, but this--it feels fresh.
It has like a little bit of a retro vibe to it.
I don't love this collection of objects--it's better to have
like, one great item than, kind of, six items
that are all kind of fighting with each other.
All right, you guys, you've seen all four apartments.
This is a really important evaluation,
because two people are going home.
God, I wish I could hear what they think about our room.
Well, we're gonna hear it later, for sure.
We were so close to absolute failure,
and I hope the panel says
that my contributions are gonna be enough to cut it.
[suspenseful music]
Hello, designers.
(various) Hello.
Sabrina, Genevieve, and I have checked out all of your apartment designs.
We've also reviewed all of your camera challenges,
and tonight, we'll be taking a look at highlights of some of them.
The winning apartment and the team who designed it
will be featured in "HGTV Magazine",
but unfortunately, two of you are gonna have to go home tonight.
Tiffany and Brooks, we'll start with you.
Okay.
How do you guys think you addressed the clients' needs?
(Brooks) The seating.
(Tiffany) The seating was key and ideal
because they were throwing out numbers like 15 to 20 people.
Tiffany, those orange chairs
were such a great use of color.
Thank you.
And I really also loved the way that the art worked with the mural.
I mean, it was a complete thought.
(Genevieve) I thought this room was really successful.
There was definitely a masculine energy,
but I felt all of the things that she wanted through the accessorizing.
I disagree--I think some of the accessories were a little unnecessary,
but all in all, I think you guys did a great job.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Tylor and Cris, let's talk to you.
All right.
Cris, we've chosen your camera challenge as one that we'd like to discuss.
Here are some highlights.
It's hard to feel at home in the world when you're renting a space, right?
But bringing in some special pieces, made by you,
are definitely the way to go.
You don't have to be an artist to create an art piece,
but art made by you will definitely feel more at home.
You're obviously at ease in front of the camera,
but would you tell your client to go paint a canvas and put it up in their house?
Um, probably not, I mean...
Probably not, so we're not gonna tell our audience to do things
that you wouldn't tell your private clients to do.
Tylor, your camera challenge is one that we're gonna watch next.
Okay.
Let's take a look.
Wanna add some architectural detail
to an otherwise plain apartment space?
An easy way to do that is a level
and a little bit of pencil.
Draw that line as a guide,
and you are set to go with a little bit of paint.
I didn't even understand what you were saying.
[laughs]
What were you saying?
I'm not sure.
As a group, you guys really need
to raise the bar on these camera challenges.
You guys know that these are coming up each and every single time,
so there's really no excuse to not be prepared-- it's never a surprise.
Cris and Tylor, let's move on
to your work in the design challenge.
(Sabrina) I really liked a lot of your pieces.
I do feel like it was, visually, too light.
Cris, the bar area was my favorite in the entire space.
That area rug is so luxurious, but then everything else
sort of fell flat around it.
The homemade art...
it very much made that space look inexpensive,
and I know you're way better than that.
Who was responsible for the overall color palette?
I encouraged using green.
Tylor, people look sick in a hospital for a reason,
and it's not just because they're there with a sickness.
It's because they're surrounded by this awful,
awful color palette that you have in your room.
There were so many pieces within this room
that were kind of nice pieces,
but the wall color really, really fought against you.
Okay, Anne and Jeribai, you guys are up.
Anne, the way that you accessorized the top
of that dining room table was impeccably done.
Jeribai, the guitar project
was really, really beautiful.
I wish that it had been larger, 'cause it kind of looks
a little bit like a cutting board right now.
Whose idea was the barbed wire art?
Nothing says "Welcome home" like a gorgeous piece of barbed wire in a transition space.
I know, I was gonna take full responsibility for that
Yes you are.
because Jeribai was not a fan.
I honestly thought it was kind of cool, I thought it was innovative.
Those stripes must've taken you guys forever .
Technically, probably the best stripe I've ever seen
on this show, ever, so you are a striping magician,
but I really, really, really wish you had some window treatments.
A drape thief came in the middle of the hall.
These things happen... be careful.
But overall, this room was really impressive.
Okay, Abby and Boris, let's talk to you.
Abby, let's check out your camera challenge.
Here are some highlights.
Hi! I'm trying to get artwork up in this apartment today,
and I am from west Texas, so I'm gonna use my cowgirl hats.
My only expense are three nails.
Now I have an artistic expression that is very personal,
as art should always be.
All right, would you be interested in this tip yourself
if I told you to hang three hats on three nails.
Would ya?
Not so much.
I think we really gotta harness some content and make this worth a tip.
(Sabrina) Boris...
let's review your camera challenge.
Okay.
One of the easiest and quickest ways to really transform a room,
of course, is color.
But to get a really nice, crisp line on the top,
I suggest taping it off, and then you're getting crown molding
without actually installing any crown molding.
The taller the ceiling, the more crown molding you can add.
I wish that you would've described the difference between
painting with tape on an orange-peel-textured wall
rather than a flat wall, because that could be very tricky for people at home.
I would watch it a little bit with the delivery.
I think it's great that you smile--it's warm, you know.
I'm a smiler.
You're a smiler, it's good.
But, you know, if you smile from the very, very first moment
to the very, very last, it begins to not feel real.
Borderline creepy.
Yeah.
Oh, we don't want that...no!
Okay, Boris and Abby, let's talk about your design challenge.
I think your window treatments were well hung, love the linen,
but then you ruined it with a big old burgundy dummy.
I was worried about that... okay, all right.
The hallway installation with the books...
(Abby) Mmhm.
who was responsible for that installation for the library area.
Well, I originally found the library.
Is that correct, Abby?
No, because I did see it first and filled it mostly and kept scavenging
and finding more books and more books and stuff.
I'm trying to re...I think the library was both of us, which it kind of was.
At the end of the day, this is an individual competition,
so who was responsible for that installation for the library area?
We have different memories.
I found the library.
What would you like to say about it?
I actually thought it was one of the more successful moments in your space.
To me, that's where it all kind of came together and worked.
Great.
Good.
Thank you, Boris and Abby.
Thank you.
All right, we have discussed your work.
Now, Sabrina, Genevieve, and I
have some decisions to make.
Two of you will be leaving this competition tonight.

at hgtv.com/star.
[suspenseful music]
This is really tough-- we have to send two people home this week.
And for me, the two people who go home
don't have to be from the same room.
I loved Jeribai and Anne's space.
(Genevieve) There was definitely a heavy dose of masculinity,
but it wasn't overpowering.
Brooks and Tiffany really did harness a lot
of the big issues that the couple had.
(Sabrina) Right, I agree.
I was very disappointed in Boris this week.
I felt like his camera challenge was lacking content and personality.
Did you see the back and forth with him and Abby
I did.
about who was responsible for that vignette?
(Vern) This room, for me, didn't work.
I agree.
(Vern) Cris and Tylor.
In that mint room, who do you think was the most responsible for those choices?
I think Tylor did some steamrolling in there,
because Cris is all vibrant color,
and that room was a pistachio, barfy nightmare.
[laughing] Barfy nightmare.
Yeah, but you know what? It takes two to tango.
(Sabrina) Yeah.
Well, we've definitely seen some beautiful stuff this week--
a lot of hits, and some misses, for sure.
Okay, so...does that mean we have a decision, we all agree?
For sure.
All right, ready to bring them back in?
Mmhm.
Okay.
Welcome back, everyone-- as always, we would like
to start off with the good news.
Let's see whose apartment Kacey and Rossi like the best.
All right, Kacey and Rossi-- you've seen all four apartments.
We have.
What do you think?
There were some great parts to all of 'em.
This is our favorite-- at least, we've agreed on it.
Yes.
This one by Brooks and Tiffany.
[cheering and laughter]
It's great, isn't it?
It's amazing.
Everything about it, we absolutely love.
Bah! Bah!
[laughter]
(Sabrina) Tiffany and Brooks, congratulations.
You were both the winners of this week's challenge.
That means you and your room will be featured
in an upcoming issue of "HGTV Magazine"
[whispering] Yes!
Also moving forward, Anne.
[whispering] Thank you.
Also continuing on is... Jeribai.
Thank you.
The four safe designers may leave the evaluation room.
Cris, Tylor,
Boris, and Abby--
unfortunately, only two of you
can continue on in this competition.
Tylor...
we will not be producing your show...
(Sabrina) I'm sorry.
Wonderful opportunity, thank you very much.
We all wish you the best of luck.
Thanks...bye.
When my name was called...
I thought it was safe. [laughs]
I'm goin' home, guys.
(Jeribai) You are?
Awww, dude.
It's all good.
It would've been great to have my own show on HGTV,
and who knows, maybe I still will.
Cris, Boris,
Abby...
One of you will not be continuing on this evening.
Abby.
Yes, sir.
You are safe.
Thank you so very much.
Cris...
We will not be producing your show.
Thank you so much for the opportunity.
To make it...here is such a blessing,
so no regrets...thank you.
I didn't make it all the way to the end,
but I've learned that I can do so much more than I thought I could.
(all) Ohhh.
It's all good.
I'm only 27, you know, what a great way to start
for me than being on "HGTV Star"?
That's the way I see it-- I've grown being here.
Good for you!
The sky is the limit for me, that's the way I see it.
Bye you guys.
Bye Cris.
Bye Tylor.
(narrator) Next time on "HGTV Star"...
Ha!
You will be transforming the kitchen.
Ah-ha!
This is where I shine.
Brooks and Anne have all of the experience in kitchen remodels, and I have zero.
I think backsplash is the kiss of death.
I'll take the risk.
This could be his ticket home.
I don't want anymore beige!
That is a fail! Terrible!
You guys did such a phenomenal job.
Oh, my gosh!
What happened this week with the design? It was basically Blandville.
It just got really, really real.
