Hi, I'm Tom Udall.
As you've probably heard, the federal government is on the verge of a shutdown.
Extreme politics and ideology are threatening the important services that everyday Americans
rely upon, and the jobs that so many New Mexicans have, in and with our government.
The bottom line is a shutdown would be a raw deal for the people we represent.
Let's put this in perspective. We're just starting to recover from an economic disaster.
As of February, New Mexico's unemployment rate was 8.7%. A government shutdown would
increase that by almost half.
That's the equivalent of half the population of Las Cruces, about 50,000 people, all being
furloughed on the same day.
Nobody should want a government shutdown.
The American people deserve both parties to set aside rigid ideologies and negotiate in
good faith.
I'm urging a bipartisan compromise to overcome this impasse and make a deal before week's
end.

Thank you for tuning in.
