Sweden adopts voluntary military service. A new measure enacted on July 1 has done away
with the conscripted military service ranging from 80 to 450 days that had been a requirement
since 1901 for young Swedish men over 18 years of age. Military service in normal peace times
will now be voluntary for both men and women. Explaining the move, Defense Minister Sten
Tolgfors highlighted reduced security concerns and a prevailing atmosphere of greater tranquility
in recent decades.
Our respectful accolades, Your Excellency and Sweden for these wise and peace-promoting
policies. May the Swedish people continue to flourish as a beacon of exemplary harmony,
inspiring many more toward the same.
