I'm Brandon Perry. I'm an instructor here at UT Austin's Professional Development Center
in the Financial Planning Certificate Program.
The CFP program at UT Austin is structured
in a seven-course series starting with fundamentals moving all the way through
all the different areas of
financial planning; finishing up with a capstone or a
case studies course that is really putting all the pieces together into a
final
class.
This program is pretty unique in that it's a classroom-based
program trying to qualify people for the CFP exam.
What we do is we provide real-world tips. We provide examples and we also
help provide some test questions - previously thrown out test questions
previously written test questions - and our coursework is designed to get you
used to how the questions are answered.
So that not only will they be able to pass the exam but they'll be able to
apply it to their clients.
In addition to qualifying to sit for the CFP exam, you're also going to get a certificate
from University of Texas.
That is no small feat. It says a lot about the credentials and a lot about what
we've gone through.
All of our instructors are practicing professionals in different areas of
expertise. We have estate planning attorneys,
we have multi-billion-dollar portfolio managers,
we have financial planners. These are people that have
worked through problems in reality of with clients.
Being able to understand what actually works verses what just
works in the book is huge and that's one of the biggest UT differences.
One of the beauties of this program is we have an ethics standard and the ethics standard
is actually higher than what the regulations are.
By adhearing to those ethics, you are putting your clients first, which is a beautiful thing;
you are removing yourself from many of the conflicts of interest, which are
what the regulations are designed to keep you away from, so
in and of this whole process, you tend to
be ahead of the curve in a lot of these danger zones that can be out there
for
financial planning.
The CFP certification program means that somebody is dedicated
to their industry. They are really
committed to bettering themselves, trying to provide
a higher level of knowledge to hopefully provide a higher level of service to their
clients if they're in the industry.
It's a very rigorous coursework and we're very proud of it
and it's a knowledge base that you can't get just
through an online course or in a text book.
