Daniel Anaya/BART Rider: " Why is it that none of the platforms. While you are waiting
for the train, have trash receptacles?"
Dan Hartwig/Deputy Chief BPD: " I'm Dan Hartwig, Deputy Chief of the BART Police Department,
Daniel - thank you for your question. In collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security,
Transportation Security Administration and multiple transit systems throughout the Nation,
at specific locations within the BART system the garbage cans indeed have been removed.
This is one of many layers that we utilize to ensure our system remains safe and secure
at all times."
After the terrorist attacks of 911, BART instituted many changes to improve security - such as
closing public restrooms in underground stations and removing some platform trash receptacles
that might be used to cause harm. BART does not discuss specifics of these security strategies.
We regret any inconvenience, but we must take these actions to ensure that safety and security
are our top priorities. Now, as for the trash...
Dan Hartwig/Deputy Chief BPD: "We rely upon our patrons to throw away their garbage at
the concourse level where you can find garbage cans next to the Station Agent's booth. In
all paid areas of the BART station, it is against the law to eat or drink. Thank you
for your question, please feel free to contact us in the future with any concerns."
Now if have a question about something you've seen, experienced or always wondered about
on BART - ask BART and we'll try to track down the answer.
