The Atlanta University Center consists of three schools including over 10,000 students
living and learning at three different campuses in walking distance of one another. With so
little distance between the campuses and the openness of the campuses of Clark Atlanta University
and Morehouse College, the administrations, students, and activities of the three schools
are constantly connected and related. During New Student Orientation week there is a day
dedicated to emphasizing the importance of AUC unity. Operation Olive Branch introduces
an official AUC unity pledge. As a student within the Atlanta University
Center, I understand that I am member of an extraordinary consortium of Historically Black
Colleges and Universities. In an effort to promote AUC unity I will:
Encourage collaboration among each institution. Respect the differences of all individuals
as their differences further enriches our AUC community. Do all that I can to lift up my brothers and sisters of the AUC.
Do all I can to eradicate any superficial ideologies that may exist that would cause
me to prejudge my AUC brothers and sisters. It is my duty to lead by example, promote
justice and social change while advocating for those in my community, the nation and
the world. It begins today, with me in the AUC.
Violence in the AUC is unnecessary. We are a collection of minorities that come from
all parts of the country. And I think that's a unique experience. This period of four years
will be our only opportunity where we'll be surrounded by such a large number of other
educated African-Americans. So I believe that by accepting and allowing violence in our
community that we are only feeding into the cycle of violence among African-Americans
nationally when we have the influence by being here to break that cycle.
