When you are young, you sometimes ask yourself…
what is your purpose in the world.
What was I put on this world to do, and so forth.
When I had those thoughts, I decided I would start learning how to use my eyes.
Kubrick called me up on the phone to congratulate me on my movie "Spoorloos".
He had watched it ten times, he said.
He said it was the most terrifying film he had ever seen.
"Well, what about The Shining?" I said.
He said: "That's child's play compared to your film. It scared me senseless."
Kinski was difficult.
It was literally a struggle of life and death.
He grabbed a pastry fork and tried to gouge my eyes out.
He jumped at me and we were fighting…
He was so violent, he didn't care at all whether he killed me.
When I wake up, the first thing that goes through my mind is "I am alive."
It's better to die on the battlefield with a sword in your hand, than on your back, lying in bed.
