What do you think of GE vs Haier chest freezers?
Chest freezers of any manufacturer are generally more efficient than upright freezers. They
are closer to a big square block of ice, with the large footprint on the floor acting like
insulation.
That's why I want a chest freezer. The problem is deciding which model.
Consumer Reports found that Haier freezers tended to understate their energy consumption.
The worst offenders used up to 85% more energy than they claimed.
That could end up costing me as much as the cost of the freezer over the unit's lifetime.
Haier's had a history of labeling things Energy Star compliant, AKA ultra-efficient, but weren't.
That was a problem Consumer Reports found going back to 2009.
How does that compare to GE?
According to Consumer Reports, GE is middle of the pack when it comes to reliability for
appliances like refrigerators and freezers. GE's quality actually hits rock bottom when
it has to make ice or has fancy features.
The only ice that should be in my freezer is the water jugs I put in there to freeze
or, occasionally, the frost that builds up.
GE freezers have problems with frost build up and eventual leakage.
It is better than a unit that uses nearly twice as much power as it says it will.
GE freezer leaks can cause electrical problems to the point that it shuts down the freezer
or causes electrical shorts.
The last thing I'd expect is a freezer catching fire.
That has happened with GE freezers, though fortunately, it has been a rare occurrence.
The only time I should have fire and ice in the garage at the same time is lighting up
the grill while getting out the frozen steaks. Which freezer do you think I should get?
If you understand that Haier understates its energy usage but not their quality, it's an
acceptable model to get. Haier has better reliability and a good price.
Just not necessarily the best reputation.
