Hello I'm Joe Wheaton,
the Associate Chair of our new Department of Educational Studies.
For the past several years I have been the Associate Director of the school
of Physical Activity and Educational Services.
My background is in Rehabilitation Counseling and Rehabilitation Psychology
and I've been at Ohio State for over twenty years.
Fortunately I now have the opportunity to part of a new department along with
my colleagues from Counselor Education, School of Psychology, Workforce Development,
and Education and Special Education.
We were part of the old School of Physical Activity and Educational Services
which was located in the PAES building next to the RPAC
but we are now part of a new department.
I can safely speak for my colleagues when I say that we believe merging with
the School of Policy and Leadership is an exciting opportunity for our faculty and students.
Together we'll be able to add a richness and diversity of thought research and
teaching which will strengthen our already outstanding programs.
Look for new synergies between Counselor Education, Educational Psychology,
and School Psychology for example.
We will also be able to expand our expertise and technology
which were used for teaching and research.
Finally the merger of into Educational Studies allows us to add a new Undergraduate Programs,
while strengthening our existing services to Undergraduates.
I currently have offices in both PAES Ramseyer Halls so I hope to meet many
of you over the course of your studies.
Welcome to the Department of Educational Studies into one of the world's
outstanding universities The Ohio State University. Go Bucks!
Hi I'm Deb Zabloudil Director of Student Services.
I'd like to welcome you to our online new student orientation.
For many of our students who work full-time it's been impossible to attend an orientation.
This will help you most.
For our full-time students there's not always enough time to acquaint you with
Ohio State before classes start.
So it's my goals that this online orientation will help supplement your
on-campus orientation with your program faculty.
Let me walk you through the different parts of the orientation.
You now have access to the Carmen portion.
Carmen is a classroom management tool like Webct and Blackboard.
In the carmen site we'll take you step by step through important items you need to
know about being a student at Ohio State.
Take a look at the video on the course home page
that shows you how to navigate Carmen if you've never used it before.
The first module we designed watching through those things that you need to
take care of before classes even start.
Making your way through this module will spare you future headaches I promise.
We divide the rest of the orientation by weeks,
walking you through some of the most important information for new students.
We also have several current students
who have agreed to be your mentors.
We will schedule a couple live chats with them
so that you can ask some questions about what it's like to be a graduate student
at Ohio State.
We will also schedule a couple chats through the Discussion Boards on Carmen.
To supplement your Orientation Site on Carmen we've developed a blog.
This site will always be open to you as a reference, so much of the Carmen
information will ultimately be posted on the blog.
Announcements of events on campus
and important program updates will be posted here.
There are a lot of changes planned for the College of Education and Human Ecology this year.
So this is the site where we'll keep you up to date on everything.
Most importantly we want you to know that you are a part of our academic
community and that your success is important to us.
So ask questions,
stay engaged with our activities,
and make the most of your graduate school experience. Welcome.
